I'll also be going but the seminars are a complete and utter waste of money.
I don't see any benefit in listening to high-level talks and paying that amount for them.

Seminars should be free TBH, it's about getting people involved not making a buck.

It is possible that they are covering costs.

quite possible, but you would imagine that they wopuld cover costs to encourage more people to the seminars, and hopefully get more people involved in energy awareness

TBH I would say they are largely preaching to the converted at the show. The main function of it is exhibition of Irish energy companies and networking.

Many (possibly most) professional conferences/seminars charge for attendance. AFAIK, this conference does not charge for entry but just for the seminars.

    More than likely!

However, it's not as if the exhibitor stands are particularly cheap either.

Oh for a bit of competition in large conference venues in this country. :(

I really don't know what the budget is or how much the RDS charge for use of their facilities.

I hate the RDS anyway. It's awkward to get to and the facilities are pretty primitive. It's essentially an old barn. :(

I think you'll find the RDS is several old barns with an attached horse shed. They have to keep the speakers and exhibitors somewhere, a bit of hay keeps the heat during the night.

Did anyone attend the thing SEI had on today in Santry? Grids of Tomorrow I belive it was called. From what I heard there was some of the same stuff going on there as there is in this one in April. Couldn't find much on twitter or any reports today about it, if you weren't there good luck to ya!

No, I hadn't heard about it.
At this stage I have to cherry-pick which conferences I go to.
A lot of the time it's the same old stuff being rehashed and the benefit in attending isn't very apparent.... and I include the networking in that statement.

So, at the risk of the thread being branded a zombie... did anyone go?

I was at it today and thought it was far superior to last year - there were far less consultants present and a lot more hardcore technology to look at.

However, it did seem a bit more quiet compared to last year.

I had a good chat with the guys who are installing the electric car recharging points for the ESB - some nifty I.T. being used there.

I went. It was nice to see a greater presence from Irish companies, not just being dominated by the Austrians & Germans.

Were they employed by ESB or are they outsourcing it? Any talk of charging stations (ie like petrol stations?)

ESB went to tender and that company won it.
    I can't think of their name. :o

I didn't ask them about charging stations but was asking more about the back-end technology and how it could interact with different billing systems.

    I'll ask them tomorrow though!

Definitely. I saw a few students walking around yesterday, actually.

They have MHRVs, a wind turbine, EVs, insulation, bio-mass, all types of solar, geothermal, etc.

10 of the "fast charge" points will be installed in motorway service stations by the end of the year!

    was there today.....
very good show... got a lot of info i need to review....

2 things caught my eye.... as cool stuff....

LED replacements for flourscent tubes at a reasonable price... €40 each..
gauranteed for 50,000 hours...... sweet... working out calculations to see if i can get them this year in work on the budget ....

also a water cooler, had no bottled water... had no water feed at all into it...
it worked by sucking the water out of the air around it, purifying it through filters and hey presto.
It should make iirc 20l an hour....
elecy costs are around 5c a litre.... nice if water charges come in... :)

Here's my thoughts on LED replacements for fluorsecent tubes:

Phillips own a massive amount of the IP for LED lights and are pouring billions into research in that field.
They still haven't released an LED replacement for a fluorescent.
If they haven't released one yet, I ain't buying any of the others.

My main issue is the spread of light from them. It's just not good enough for many applications - poor uniformity

Was at the show as an exhibitor and thought it was a little quieter than last year, but the quality and knowledge of visitors was far better.

They seemed to do a good job on the door of keeping it pretty much trade only this year.

All in all a good show!

Did you make any useful contacts from it?

Also, I fully agree with the "trade only" sentiment! Nothing worse than the "professional event attenders"!

uniformity?? is quite good actually.. imo

well the HSE have just fitted out an office complex with them, seemingly to good response from the users, and no offence we all no how picky Public Sector workers are.....

also a carlow car park in a shoppin centre has fitted them over flourescent and sems to work quite well....

I went to two seminars - one "Energy Efficient Lighting Solutions" and the other was "Advanced Information and Communications Technologies (ICT)- From Desktops to Server Rooms". The first one was interesting however as you say it was not worth the €60 however the Computing one was worth it (to me). I got a lot of information on Server room layout so as to maximise cooling with just a slight re-arrangement.

Yes, a few new contacts. But it was more useful to us in rekindling old relationships!
