Setting up a new running club

Has anybody gone through this process etc?

Club would be North Dublin based (adult) Malahide area based/training etc.

Obviously the big guns are Raheny/Clonliffe north side but there is a huge amount of runners/joggers in or near that area that might be interested.

Looking AAI rules and you need 10 runners to start.

It's just an idea at the moment between a few runners so any thoughts would be useful.

    Hi there,
Not too hard really to do , I take it you have read the setting up a club link on the AAI site. There were some clubs in the protmarnock/malahide area in the past but fell away, would be good to see another North Dublin club.

    Starting a Club

Athletics Ireland can provide all the support and expertise needed to form a new athletics club.

    Our Development Team offers:

Guidance and support from the local RDO (Regional Development Officer)
Three free places on Athletics Leader or Assistant Coach course
On completion of Athletics Leader course by three people, a bag of Little Athletics equipment
How To Set Up A New Athletics Club
A new club needs 10 members, four of whom must be over 21.
A new club must elect a chairman, secretary, children’s officer, registrar and treasurer.
A new club must submit an application to their county board to receive clearance to form the new club.
A new club’s application should contain a copy of the club constitution (link here to club constitution & committee structures document document)
The county board informs Athletics Ireland in writing that the club application has been approved.
A new club then applies to Athletics Ireland to become a member.
A new club’s registration charge with Athletics Ireland is €150 per annum.
The cost of registering a member is €15 for adults and €10 for under-18s.
Athletics Ireland will forward a password to the club secretary to allow the new club register members online.

Yeah rules looks straightforward. With the running boom and springtime etc it's an ideal time to start one in the area.

Yep getting set up isnt that hard at all, once you get 10 members you can have your clubup and running fairly quick. I think the main issue is growth from there that will take a bit of work. But there are lots of people out there to help and most other clubs are more then willing to help out.

First step would be to contact your friendly neighbourhood regional development officer. I believe Bart Rogers is the man for North Dublin. (If you find yourself straying towards the Meath frontier give me a shout).

    Contact details here:

It takes a bit of time and commitment to get things off the ground, you might dip into the thread on here recounting the process that Boards AC went through to get a feel for it.

Good luck, its always good to see new clubs forming.

If this takes off I'd be interested. I think the Memebership Fee for Clonliffe is over €100, hopefully the joining fee can be kept to a minimum to encourage runners to get involved.

Well it wont be anything like that I can tell you.In fairness we wont have a tartan running track! It will be very low fee.....

You can use Club Mash (www.clubmash.com) to setup a website... they are free for the first year at the moment. That helps with organising.

i used it to set up a walking club website. Maybe you could let me know what sort of running club you are setting up... beginner or what, and where it is as i have been getting into a bit of running myself. Hope this helps

Why not just join Raheny or Clonliffe - they cater for all standards?

The joining fee is a bit OTT with both these clubs:P

Well when you actually think about it the fees arent really that bad, that gets you membership, access to track and coaching for a year :) for the price of 2 months in a gym.

But would be nice ot run for the area that your living in too, in the past there was a nice norht dublin XC cc for junior clubs that was a great series...

The fees are only around the same cost as a pair of running shoes.

Both Clonliffe and Raheny already have a lot of members from Malahide / Portmarnock area.

    OTT ?
Your annual subscription for Clonliffe gives you use of the track and gym on Tuesdays and Thursday evenings and at certain times at the weekend. You are also guaranteed a hot shower after your training. The fee also includes your AAI membership and the Club pays your entry fee to all Championship races. You also have free access to advice and coaching. You are also covered by insurance.
Add to that, the cheapest pint in North Dublin in cosy surroundings.
The Club also runs a Grand Prix series with some of those races taking place in Malahide.
OTT, I don't think so. Good value more like.
