    Hey,

Im on the waiting list for accomadation in a frat house for my J1 in Boston this summer, 2010, and trying as many as I can at the moment because I think there the best way to go money and fun wise!

Has anyone had any luck so far thats in the same situation?

Anybody got any contact details to try?

    Hi
Myself and some friends (all girls!) got accomodation in a frat house in Berkeley one summer while on a J1 - pros are that it was great fun and relatively cheap, cons are it was pretty grimey, and the students started to move back in half way through August. Many of the fraternities have their own web pages, best way to make contact directly. Some of the fraternities have quite bad reputations when it comes to girls so just be careful about where you choose - the one we stayed in was fairly nerdy and I think they were just a bit scared of us!

It's pot luck really whether you get a decent frat house or not. I spent a summer there but rented an apartment but alot of friends stayed in 3 different MIT frat's with varying experiences. They are generally very nerdy houses and the yanks sometimes are just not prepared for J1'ers. Out of the 3 houses, I only found one decent craic when it came to the frat boys and the partys there. I can't remember the name of it (possibly Kappa Sigma)but it was on Massachusetts Ave very close to the Harvard Bridge over the Charles River. It had a great roof deck, pool table etc etc and had a very laid back atmosphere. It was within walking distance to the city too. Make sure you see pictures of your rooms as some friends ended up renting the library that some frat boys built crappy beds in and clearly pocketed the money themselves.

It usually varies how 'fun' frat houses are in different states etc. For example Californian frats tend to be that bit wilder from what I have heard anyways.

I stayed at one in Berkeley (near San Fran) this Summer and it was great fun. While one or two kept to themselves mostly, there was really a sense of togetherness between everyone. There's usually 20+ people living there anyway. Some were actual frat brothers and most were just people renting them for the Summer. There was two groups of Irish people, us included and they had no problem with us. We got on really well with them and they were sad to see us go:(

Benefits of frat houses include cheap rent during the Summer, the frat gets a socializing fund so they usually throw parties with this (kegs and other drinks usually included) and get to meet great people.

Some people say they are in really bad shape, but IMO, they're really not. Some can be slightly rough around the edges, but very livable at the same time. It's definitely worth the money.
