Deadlift Straps or no?

    Just looking to get an opionion, currently not using straps for deadlift (circa 130kgs) just wondering what the general consensus is on this, are straps benificial or should you just let your grip strength catch up.

    Let your grip catch up. Bring the straps in when you are lifting a bit heavier.

    1: use mixed grip if your not: one hand facing away from you, the other towards you

    2: use chalk if your not

    3: if both of those fail on heavier weights, use straps.

    How heavy? Why not just let his grip catch up then too?

    Well I suppose there is a limit to any persons grip strength that will end up limiting their deadlift.

    Possibly but that limit should probably outstrip your ability to shift the load. Grip wise I could definately lift more than I do but that wasn't always the case and all that means is that it is not a limitng factor for me. It's a frustrating thing if you are limited by your grip especially because it is so easily fixed.

    Not at all. Grip should be greater than your deadlift stength unless you have pudgy palms and stubby fingers.

    IMO straps aren't ever needed in deadlifts. Beginners alway think of straps, I think it's a big no-no. If a beginner who couldn't bench considered a bench shirt everyone would baulk but grip is a part of deadlifting. Even in equipped powerlifting you're not allowed to use straps.

    The CNS taxation of gripping something very tight against great resistance is a big part of the strengthening effect of deadlifting. Shortcut that and it's just another back exercise.

    Get your hands on some chalk or som liquid chalk (outdoor shops).

    Thats the way I would have always considered it but just seem to be hitting a plateau, I was thinking of maybe reducing the reps from 8 to 6 and giving the straps a try, I suppose the trade off I am considering is mass for grip strength.

    try chalk if you havent, i cant re-iterate it enough, it will work wonders.

    Thanks everyone for all the advice, am up the north tomorrow so will stock up on some chalk and post up how it goes, deaflift is the only thing letting me down at the moment compound wise and as I train on my own it good to get honest advice.
