Swapping Out Axles

After catastrophic failure of my fixed hub today i'm going to try going down the bolt on cog route.

for anyone with less time on their hands than me that may not have spent hours on t'inernets, this is basically taking a front MTB hub that can be used with disc brakes. to make this usable as a rear fixed gear hub i need to put in a solid threaded track axle.

wow this is starting to feel like a H:Bally post ;),

anyway to the question, what's the story with swapping out a regular hollow QR axle to a threaded one... i know i can take a QR axle out but does anyone know if i will run into difficulty putting in a threaded axle

Any thoughts would be appreciated, thanks

    good decision:D
in no time we will have everyone in dublin going fixed with bolt on hubs:p
think disaster on dfgss has the right idea with the hub off crc and the conversion kit off velosolo. if you end up ordering anything give us a shout cause i might buy a kit too

Did the same thing. You won't have any problem swapping out the axle. The only thing to watch out for it that you can remove the cone from the hollow axle. I don't know if the cup/cones are standard but best to stick with the one that was in there already. It's pretty straightforward and works very well. The londonfixiebike cogs are very good quality, nice and thick

lol londonfixiebike.co.uk has moved, guess where?

So, it seems that all i need is cog, axle, spacers and track nuts.?

Now the question is to figure out what length spokes i need...

I have used this spoke calculator with success. Different calculators sometimes give different results though, so it can be a bit hit and miss. There is some useful info on that site though about how to accurately calculate the ERD - I have seen other sites suggest variations which lead to longer or shorter spokes, which might explain the different results that different sites give. They should all be fine so long as you take the nipple length into account too (I think the standard with DT spokes is 12mm, but beware that CRC supply 14mm ones).
