Run a cable directly from your UPC modem (not the router) into the PS3 .

    On the PS3 goto :

    Network settings.
    Internet Connection Settings.
    Easy.
    Automatic for everything else.

When complete check what it says ...goto:
    Network settings
    Internet Internet Connection test.

Turn off the firewall in the modem settings ..this should sort it .

    heres the manual :http://www.upc.ie/pdf/4755_UPC_WiFi_Brochure.pdf

To get into your settings type 192.168.1.1 into your address bar , leave user and password blank

On your laptop web browser or ps3 web browser , type 192.168.1.1 . Leave user and password blank
When your in the settings you should see a option for firewall ..turn it off

I don't know what your mate has configured as that could be a problem also.

You don't need psn up to do this

OK , but still try and see if your loosing your connnection mid game. Then try next steps .
But you really need to know and reverse what your mate did , trying to second guess and resolve could take days .

Resetting the Cisco completely would solve this, there is a reset button at the back (reset not restart) as long as you either have the paperwork that came with it that has the SSID and password written on it so you can connect via wireless (I had the same one installed last week, not the easiest to find what the password is even when connected via ethernet to it), or if you are still planning on using the ethernet connection just go through mixednuts network setup again and it will be back to it's defaults.

Op, please learn to write properly. Also, PSN was pretty much down since Sunday. Do you not watch the news / listen to radio / read the interwebs?

    Nat2 is all you need

NAT2 is what I have for my wireless setup with UPC but, I thought NAT1 would be expected for a wired connection?

No. Many, many people have no idea what NAT 1 or NAT 2 or even NAT is. It's nothing to do with Wired or Wireless.

NAT1 means that your device [PS3 in this case] is internet facing. That is, not protected by your firewall. It is outside you local network. therefore, if you wanted to stream movies or music to your PS3, you wouldn't be able to. However, Because you are not protected by the firewall, you should be able to play any games, if you only have one PS3.

NAT2 means that you are protected by your firewall. All ports needed by the PS3 are open or forwarded to it. This may be static mapping or uPNP enabled. In this config, your PS3 is on the inside of the network so you stream stuff to it.

NAT3 is like NAT2 except no ports are specifically open for it or uPNP is also disabled. Games MAY work. Streaming will work.

Clear as mud? It is in my head.

Sounds like what I've heard before. So, is NAT1 the same as setting your ps3 up as a dmz?

Exactly. In the normal order of things, not what you want OR need. The main reason people started talking about NAT1 being REQUIRED months, if not years ago, hear on boards was purely down to eircom and their cheap routers. NAT1 is not the solution. The solution is to use a router that isn't crap.

Because of those talks, now everyone who doesn't know any better think they NEED NAT1.
