Well, as far as I'm concerned, this guy has got to be the most stupidest idiot I've ever come across. He lost his two legs and an arm in Afghanistan but now wants to go back and serve as a snipper

I know us guys can be so stupid with machoism, but this fella takes the biscuit for me " TOM NEATHWAY's last tour of duty in Kajaki was cut short by a blast that felt, he said, like "being hit by a hard rugby tackle". What do you think ?

Triple amputee wants to return to Aghanistan

What do you think of this fella, hero or idiot ? 54 votes

    His life must be hell.
What else has he got to live for?

I'd probably want to do the same thing.

A snipper you say? As long as he's just cutting things and not actually shooting anyone, what's the harm?

Raising this on After Hours, by a guy calling himself Slab Murphy says more about the OP than it does the soldier tbh.

    'Wants to rejoin army'

I think you read it wrong OP. He doesn't want to go to Afghanastan, he just wants his limb back.

Not as stupid as saying the "most stupidest". :pac:

He may have wanted to do nothing else but join the Army since he was young and there is nothing stopping him, people should look up to him. I doubt he could become a sniper though cause he wouldn't be mobile enough but maybe he could get another job in communications. It may also be the adrenaline.

Nothing to live for, fear of normality and the thought of being an invalid within the normal society has led him to believe that at least in war he may serve a purpose

He's already lost 3 limbs, didn't we miss the boat on judging if he is an idiot or not?

I watched a documentary a few months ago about guys like him. Thanks to improvements in trauma care lots of guys like him are now surviving who would have otherwise died from there injuries.
The documentary was very hard to watch tho, young fit men reduced to this. But the majority pulled thru and were walking again within 6/8 weeks! They have made serious advancements in prostetics almost to the stage where it would be hard to notice that some of them had no legs.

Regardless of the war and the politics, i say fair play to him! You would need to have some level of mental fortitude to go thru what he has gone thru and come out the other end with the attitude he has!

    Good luck to him!

i'd recomend under cover ops.,cos he looks like an afghan sheep farmer now. no insult to afghan sheep farmers intended.

    Fair fúcks to him....
He could stay at home on a disability pension and no one would begrudge him OR he can go back out there and do his job.
I'd love to see all the people calling him a dope on here and how they'd react if they lost 3 limbs..
prob screaming for "mammy mammy" and planning to spend the rest of their lives on welfare slowly losing all their dignity and self respect.
At least this guy has it.. I hope he gets back there..

yea..poor sod. i suppose until assisted suicide is legalised over there its the best way out..

The lad has my respect. Given the choice between spending his remaining years (and at 26, that's a lot of years) on disability, or going back, he chooses to go back. As he has said: it's a mindset. His arm and legs got blown away, but he can still go back to fight another day. Most people who get caught by an IED die, but this dude gets out of his bed, and works to get back up to military standard.

Yeah, it makes it quite clear alright, he's a macho numbskull. Just the type that join the Parachute regiment, Jeremy Kyle show chavs.

I mean suppose you heard that some fellow in the Taliban lost 3 limbs but still wanted to volunteer to fight for the Taliban. The very same people who are priasing this British soldier would be the very ones denouncing the lunatic who after losing 3 limbs would want to rejoin the Taliban

He'd have to have lost 4 limbs and his head to want to do that.

Yeah, a will to survive and to get back to his vocation, what a loser. The Parachute Regiment is a superb outfit. One of the finest fighting units on the planet. They're quite, quite mad, but that tends to come with the job. Takes hard types to make it in the Paras.

You're also quite mistaken in the reasons you perceive for people's respect. It wouldn't be about "Oh, mad bastard, losing three limbs and rejoining the Taliban." Not many people would support his involvement with the Taliban in the first place, while they'd be far more inclined to support those fighting for the British Army out there, and this guy has the courage to go back to what is popularly believed to be the "right" side after what's happened to him. Conversely, Taliban leaders would make the same point about one of their own who chose to go back to fighting having suffered severe injuries, but wouldn't exactly laud this guy. It's about what side you align yourself with.
