Drinking energy drinks provided on marathon day?

Probably overanalyzing stuff here but anyway! On all my long runs I've been carrying 20 oz's of water, and take a lemon gel every 50 minutes or so. I'm just wondering come marathon day:

    1) Should I take the energy drink provided at the water stations if I havent used such a drink in training?

    2) Do I even need to take these energy drinks if I'm taking gels anyway?

Honestly - stick with the water and gels. Nothing new on race day.

Or find out what the energy drink is beforehand and try and take it on a long run. For the Berlin marathon, the brand was something unknown that is probably not sold outside of Germany, so I gave it a miss. Better to suffer a little, than suffer a lot.

Ever tried it? Have never heard about it myself personally!

it's maxim isn't it? The channel swimmers swear by it. Tastes very bland so I tend to drink it like water not sports drink.

I tend to drink whatever is on offer during a marathon but I've a good stomach (for 12 hours anyway - after this it gets dodgy!) and I'm not an elite. The prudent advise is nothing new on race day so either try it before or bring your own.

Same here. I've always taken whatever is on offer, and seem to have an iron stomach (though I've never done an event that took 12 hours:D). The general rule is not to do that though, and only take stuff that you are used to.

Can you buy that Extram stuff anywhere in Ireland?

Yeah and you probably get it in a little plastic cup. Its impossible to drink that while running...ya just end up a sticky mess!
