last week the army were shooting deer on the wicklowgap /turlough hill area. I don't know how many were shot but the army hellycopter was seen lifting 3 deer of the hill 3 times. that's some expence for 9 nine deer. i thought the country was broke.

i bet they taste better than paper targets. they have to train anyway so why not get something for the effort . :D

tell me cos i dont know, does everyone shoot up in wicklow. is it just common ground or what, from reeding posts on here over the past year or so i would guess that there are thousands of deer shot up there every year.

No, the army are getting Apache helicopters in from Israel to deal with the Muntjac problem in Wicklow.

i have stalked all that area over the years from laragh to ballengee bridge, the area your talking about is national park .the rangers were using choppers to extract animals .

not very eco friendly ,considering the npws promised to have all the vehicles running on biofuel by this year in there 5 year plan.

my drag rope cost €10 to make and run.

( if you cant pull em you should not pull on them)

is this like a private top class shooting club for the rangers and their friends.are they going around with little pot bellies and are incapable of getting them off the ground themselves. i would love to of been in the board room when this idea was brought up.

how do you know exarmy have permission, from who, i am also army, there nothing special, no special club, land owners delighted to have someone shoot deer, go and ask them, have insurance you will get a good response, like anywhere else in the country they are delighted to have them culled, nothing special about the place, some people who shoot there think it is an exclusive elite club (area), go ask the landowners you will be suprised with the response. I have permission to shoot a huge area there but too far to travel on a regular basis.

Somebody please tell me they're using proper ammunition for this, and not 5.56 FMJ.

the army has a gunclub where members can use their own civvie rifles to shoot deer, there are not hordes of infantry running round wicklow with steyrs, ffs a bit of common sense lads.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,612 ✭✭✭jwshooter

talk about a dog running with a bone .

the deer stalking the army have is in the (glen of imaal) ,on there range there.
the area in the OP was talking about is on the wicklow gap on the national park.
the army dont cull with the park ,parsay.

there is noting stopping the head ranger asking ,employing who they wish to cull with them .
as far as using 5.56 fmj that would not happen .

the only time the army kill deer in the glen is if the deer are on the range when the lads are fireing morters

The Army was used to cull goats on the Cooley penninsula a few years ago during the F+M outbreak.

possibly ,but unlikely .they dont just put lead in the air for the hell of it.

the hunting is done on foot there not allowed to bring quads into it ,and have to sign in and out

then they must have their own helicopter in that case or does the army gunclub have the right to use the army helicopters and by the way nice attitude ffs

Correct, the defence forces club is for game shooting just because they are in a gun club does not give them the authority to shoot deer be it on military property or elsewhere. They are governed by civil law just like anyone else, being in the defence forces does not give them any special rights to shoot deer.

I'm no army person, but I have an idea about why there'd be helicopters used.

Would it be possible that the Army Ranger Wing were doing more than merely hunting, but survival training, and the carcasses would be used as instructional specimens for showing the proper way to gut an animal for eating?

In a real situation, gutting would occur after killing, but for some reason they needed to be transported to where the gutting instruction would take place. As the helicopters would be at the Ranger's disposal anyway, why send additional resources to collect the carcasses when an asset is in place available to do the job in a fraction of the time?

Of course, I could be wayy off the mark here!

And if the above is the case, and the helicopter use was connected to ranger training, is it really for a public forum to discuss the details of how we train our most elite soldiers?

the army club in the glen is made up of severing and x army members ,they have authority to cull deer on the ministry of defence property in the glen of imaal .
they use there own firearms,in cals that are layed down by the npws.

    whats the problem .

what happened is a cull of deer in the national park wicklow gap /glenealo area.
iv stalked the ground above it and more or less all around it , honest .glenealo its self is a magnificent place .you would think you were in Jurassic park during the rut ,with the roaring and whistling.a sight to hear and see.

there is @ 700 animals living in this area give or take 300 .hubert H once said "its not hard to count deer accurately ,its impossible". he shot most of this area pre national park.

during this season the (rangers) have culled about 160 animals, from the area in question.
with the numbers living in glenealo plus the area is of special scientific interest, also you would not get a bike into most of it or drag enough out of it anyway.
it was decided to extract by chopper .
i would love to see quads banned of all mountains ,any one on lug lately even the blackstaires is tore in bits from bikes and quads.

the air corp have to fly x amount of training exercises ever year.this gave them a ideal opportunity to gain some hands on training .

the culling was done by rangers ,using mostly 25,06s .

    i hope that covers it.

Smarter would be a ban on idiots using these incorrectly,or at least corralling them in a specific area.Rather than an outright ban on an extremly useful tool for deer hunting and carcass recovery.
Funny how we get all hot and botherd when people call for a "ban" on our sports, yet when we feel somting offends we are quick to talk about banning other people's sport.Live and let live.

NO deer shot there by army,NO expense spared to recover carcasses,it's nothing to do with use of meat or money for it-politics and PR is the name of the game.

What would Gormley say about the army shooting deer i wonder?
    (if they were)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,612 ✭✭✭jwshooter

it was a cull on the national park ,done by rangers alone , the air corp flew the animals out ,as a training exercise .

all animals were recovered and went into the food chain .

the cull has to be done ,its not a recreational thing or hobby folks.

I think you're wasting your time explaining jw.

If you started a thread here saying "Black" there'd be lads jumping in saying: "White? who said white? why is it white? how could it be white when it can only be black?" etc.

Followed by: "I think it's too loud anyway"

    :D
