Is my PS3 done for?

Playing Fifa this morning and finished up a game. Then suddenly it crashes and I restart the machine but it doesn't recognise that I have a disk in the drive. Switch it off and try again but still no luck. Try two other dvds to see if it will read them but nope.

I bought this back in the Autumn of 07. 60gb model.

This is a load of ****.

Sounds like the blu ray laser packed it in possibly.

When you turned it back on you must have got the message about it not being turned off properly?

I'm no expert on this, but your PS3 is not done for totally. I've seen reports of firmware for the DVD/BD drive getting corrupted - there are options to rebuild database, rebuild filesystem, and format hard drive in the PS3's recovery mode. No guarantee that any of them would be helpful to you, but the database and filesystem options are good ports of call. Obviously, ensure you've backed up to an external harddrive before you consider formatting though.

Sorry for going on, but I feel obliged to add a (barely related) caveat:

Only issue I have had in the past was similar to this - gradually my PS3 stopped recognising discs, it became less and less likely the machine would recognise BDs (movies or games), but it always read DVDs fine. Not the same problem you're having. I solved it by following a YouTube video to disassemble and access the laser to wipe it with a cotton bud. I don't recommend this though. I've had to do it twice, both times it worked for me. I suggested to another Boardsie and the next message I saw was about how his system went totally tits up. Remember, if you're out of warranty, and you can't blag a replacement using your charm/friends/cleavage, other Boardsies have recommended repair outfits like Console Repairs Ireland. Can't vouch for them personally, never used 'em.

your PS3 is far from being done.....all you need is a replacement laser....

And being that you have the 60gb model it's well worth keeping it alive as it has the backward compatibility and a card reader and 4 usb ports....

I am a 60gb fan....my advice is to get a bigger hard drive and then you have a pretty serious bit of kit.....

One thing about the lasers going is best not to pause the game so much....or leave in games for hours that you're not playing....

How much will it cost to get the laser replaced? Does it take long to do?

The 60GB Blu-Ray laser costs around €50 delivered and if you are anyway handy at fixing things, takes around 30 mins to fit.

I got mine from this shop before Christmas, genuine new Blu-Ray laser, not refurb.

if you're going to do it yourself things to be careful with are the ribbon cable clip on the motherboard and the disk sensor connection on the blu ray drive....dissconnect it before you remove the blu ray drive black cover....

Something similar happened me today when I turned on my ps3 for a mw2 fix. When I pressed d game icon to start the game. It just went blank on screen n crashed. Tried different disk n same story.

When I turned it on it den wanted me to restore the hard drive. I let it do this n then it wanted to rebuild it's database. After this I reset the display settings also as unread that this xan also cause the problem. Luckily after this it worked. N haven't had any more problems today.

Perhaps it is something to do with the lastest update as it seems my firmware was corrupt.

Same thing happened to me...And I may have the solution :p...I got really p!ssed off so I started to try and fix it by performing a full system format...Not the slow one...It took me about 17 hours to do it and woohooo I got it working...But then last week I got the YLOD...make sure you perform a full system format or it may not work..

Anyways thats how I fixed mine hope it works for you aswell...

Hey, was it the exact same thing? I did a quick format but nothing happened. Might try a full one this evening.

Ugh...I contacted Console Repairs Ireland and they said it would cost €100 to fix and would take between 7 and 10 days to repair the thing. And that's not even saying that it'll work in the end. And plus you only get a 6 month guarantee with it which kinda sucks.

I'm half tempted to go out and buy a brand new one for 250 to save any hassle :(. What do you guys think?

Do you have an technical knowledge or know-how to open up and repair the PS3 yourself?
Fixing the Blu-Ray is probably the easiest PS3 repair there is.

Certainly not worth wasting nearly €200, just to get a new one.

Can't say I'm very good at those things. Can the lens be purchased in town?

Unlikely and if you did it will be expensive.
From the tone of your posts, if can see you are going to be impatient and buy a new PS3.

Well, I would put EXTREME caveats on that statement. While it it one of the easiest things to do, it is only that way if you know what you are doing. There are two, maybe three ribbon cables connecting the drive parts. If you tug the drive before safely disconnecting the clips, then you are in for a WORLD of pain.

Also, even if you try to un clip the ribbon cables, you may break the "clips" and be in the same world of pain.

Hey, where can I pick up an all in one lens cleaner/fluid?

Saw a youtube video explaining how to clean it and I think I'll give it a shot.

It is easier to replace the whole blu ray drive, quick swap , but changing the lens is a lots harder especially if you mess up the gears which I did on my cousins, got it working eventually after a lot of jiggery pokery

    Easier but more expensive,

With every repair if you dont know what your doing you'll make it worse a lot worse,

If you have no experience in opening modern electronics then pay someone to repair it for you, if not you will make it worse,

I recomend to everyone that you shouldn't attempt to repair yourself, 9 times out of ten you'll make it worse, in the end costing more
