Both have same engine, I'd imagine going by weight that the Golf would be slightly quicker. From a space point of view the boot in the Octavia is massive compared to that in the Golf. If it was me I would look also at a Skoda Octavia VRS TDI, not too much worse on the performance but much better fuel economy. I'm thinking the Golf and Octavia in petrol will do early 30mpg's and the VRS TDI should do early to mid 40mpg's.

Op with that mileage i would stick to the better TFSI version of the Octavia vRS, a more powerful and smoother drive then its diesel counterpart imo. Im on my second one now and really like its all-round abilities from performance to practicality (2 kids!) and reliability. It’s quite a smart looking car that won’t grab too much attention also. I have never owned a GTI so cant comment on it but i have owned 2 BMWs (E46 320D/E90 325i) and a Mazda 3 MPS in-between my first vRS and my current one so any 'badge' issues with Skoda don’t cut it for me. I bought the first one from new with zero issues over a year and half and im the second owner of my current one with no issues to date (touch wood). For me the GTI is too common and the fact im 32 and have a couple of kids just makes the vRS perfect for my needs. If i was single and more concerned with image well probably the GTI i guess (then again i would have more money so would get an R32 or something!).

Both good cars in their own right - golf probably has a better reputation (deserved or not) but the Octavia is a great car & more spacious.

    What is your budget?

As said golf is gonna be all lot more expensive but alot more saleable aswell in the long term, few cars will hold their value like a golf
