iPhone is disabled

guys, my friend has a first generation iPhone 8GB (Metal backing and half silver/black).

it was unlocked and running on a meteor sim for the last year or 2.
she brought it to a well known phone shop and the guy offered to update the firmware for her free.

she didnt know that the update would wipe everything and possibly re-lock the phone to O2.anyway now when she puts her meteor sim into the phone she is asked for a passkey, is this the same as pin or is it a specific iPhone pin.

she knows a couple of codes it could be but everytime we narrow it down and its wrong it disables the phone for 15 mins, 30min,60mins etc etc

so we decided to stick a spare O2 sim in to see if its locked to O2 and its the same story, it askes for a passcode.

she has a security code that she is certin it is and we havent tried that yet and will try it next when it un-disabled itself in 54mins!

anybody have any experience with this and is the iPhone bricked?

    thanks.

Update - even with an O2 sim it asks for a passcode!
noneof her pin numbers work. when new firmware is installed does iTunes reset the passcode to 0000 or 1234 or similar?

    thanks.

O.K , this is what i can work out....

It's a 2G phone that was jailbroken and unlocked , a helpful  shop assistant updated the firmware to 3.1.3 and rendered the jailbreak and unlock useless .
You now have a device that's looking for official carrier sim and is no longer jailbroken or unlocked .

If I am correct , try this :
    http://www.redmondpie.com/jailbreak-iphone-os-3.1.3-firmware-with-redsn0w-0.9.3-9140421/

You have nothing to loose , if it fails simply restore in iTunes and you will be back to were you are now.

    Good luck.

I think firmware 3.1.3 included a baseband update. Itunes will probobly return a error if you try to restore to 3.1.2. or earlier.

we put the O2 sim card into my nokia 6300 and entered the pin and it works perfect.

i put the O2 sim into the iPhone and enter the pin and get the messege
"iPhone is disable, connect to iTunies" and when i do i cant do anything with it.

and while this is all happening, up in the top left corner theres small text saying "sim locked"

    It's a 2G , baseband won't be an issue .

sounds like it's not an 02 phone . Try what mixednuts suggested .

she knows the guy in the shop and he said sure give it to me and i'll update it for ya! if i knew before she was giving it to him i wuda stopped her as i knew all about the 3.1.3 issues.

    Gumbo,
I asked about it been from the States as the O2 Irish sim is not been recognized , this tells me it needs the sim from the country its bought from . Not to worry , follow the guide I sent you .
Ignore step 1 about updating the phone to 3.1.3 , that's done already .

It might look daunting but it really is easy .
All the tools ( required software) is at the end of the page as shortcut dowloads.
Give it a go , no harm .
If it don't work you simply hook the phone back up to iTunes and hit "restore".
But I bet you it will work if the phone you say is a 2G.
    Any probs let me know.

God protect us from "helpful" o2 shop assistants - they really are shamefully clueless.

Are you arguing the point that o2 shop workers are shamefully clueless or just being pedantic?

It's a statement based on extensive experience where I invariably know as much or more about my phone and the problem it's having than the people in the store do.

I haven't heard too many people ever speak well about them tbh.
