When you've just bought a car, how do you get it to your place as you've just bought it and you don't have insurance for it yet?...

Change a family policy onto it to drive it home or arrange new insurance over phone or trailer

Most insurance companies will allow you to switch your cover to a diff car for the day/few hours. Just explain the reason why, they'll understand. You could always ask someone who drives to do this for you if you are without insureance yourself. Worst case is a trailer :D

Or yes get insured yourself on it first. If you knew you were getting the car today you could have organised to have your insurance in advance for the policy to start today. Even if you didn't have the disc but had a letter and it was genuine if the guards checked, they would be most likely lienant and let you take it home.

Don't forget you'll need to get it taxed if it's nopt already. If need be have a guard sign a declaration of non use and get it taxed at the start of the month

Get someone who has the driving of other cars extension on their policy to drive it (3rd party only) to your place and arrange insurance by phone or internet before you drive it yourself

Will a family member not be able to help out if they already drive?

Usually it's free to do it, if they do charge it's something small like €20 which you could pay for them :D

Do you need to do this if the car is already taxed? (like most car adds have something like taxed till 06/10 or something like that)...

And well, most of my family members are too busy to come around with me to check out the cars so thats something i'll probably have to do by myself. But I guess once I find the right car and make a deal with the person selling it, I could either get someone to take it home for me or wait till I've gotten insurance on it and then drive it home myself...

As I said you'll only have to get it taxed if it's not already taxed :D

As your only picking it up you won't have the log book for another week so the guards won't bother you with that one :)

Oh and if it's already taxed then no it won't need to be declared off the road as it's been legally taxed to be on the road :)

If your buying your 1st car would you not want to have it insured from the second you own it so you can drive it?

When you pick the car you like ring/go online to get a quote for insurance and take note of the quote number. If you decide to buy arrange a time for collection and then call the insurance company and get your insurance for that time.

If you want to test drive cars and have no current insurance go to garages as they have sales polices on which you can drive with a sales person. Then when you've figured out which type of car you actually like check both private and dealers for them.

If buying private make sure the owner takes you for a spin in the car and make them drive it on loads of different road types and make use of all the gears.

When you do pick a car get a mechanic you trust to check it over or get an AA/RAC inspection done.
