hi, could anyone tell me the journey time travelling Dublin to Limerick via bus eireann?
I will be departing on a Monday morning 7.30am so taking traffic into consideration and stops along the journey.. would 3hours be a reasonable guesstimate?

    Thanks in advance..

Its scheduled to take 3h40, but I suspect it would be a bit quicker than that.

Buses I've been on intercity generally don't get there any quicker than their scheduled time because if they arrive at any individual stop earlier than they should, they'll wait until the timetabled time before leaving again. So any time advantage gained just gets lost.

I'd imagine its hell because it takes nearly two hours longer than just driving there?

I would stay away from bus eireann, they take ages and they stop for new reason in the middle of nowhere for 15mins on the way. Try www.jjkavanagh.ie/

Id say leave 3.30hrs for it, you will be hitting traffic when you get to Dublin, even with the bus lanes.

Unless they ignore their own timetable JJ Kavanagh are no faster, their timetables give 3h40-3h50mns for the trip and stop in the same places.

Towards Dublin I usually find I will be in about 20mns ahead of the scheduled arrival time as we are given 70mns from Kildare and with a clear run it can be done in 50mns. Traffic permitting of course.

Towards Limerick it would be unusual to be more than a few minutes early.

We don't stop in the middle of nowhere, we stop at a place with toilets and refreshments because people will generally want a break in a long journey.

Even with the break we are scheduled Limerick-Portlaoise in 2 hours, JJK give 2h10 so if they don't take a break I don't know how they take so long.

How long does it take to drive from Dublin to Limerick in a car on the motorway?

There's a relatively new bus service that goes (fairly) direct from Dublin to Limerick, dublincoach.ie It's a tenner each way and they only stop in Red Cow, Kildare Village and a couple of Limerick suburbs. Friend used it at the weekend and reckons it was excellent. Think the Dublin terminus is around westmoreland street, it's a standout green colour anyway. Journey time approx. 2:45

According to Google maps the current travel time is 2 hours 25 mins *

Of course it depends on where you are going to and from and the time you travel at. Also it can be faster if you don't strictly follow the speed limit.

    * Note this is the estimated travel time based on traffic levels as collected by google phones on the route, etc. So pretty accurate and pretty cool.

It does not stop at Portlaoise! It arrives at Limerick via the University

They also do a Portlaoise-Dublin service which is probably why ;)

Last time it took me 1:40 from Lucan (west Dublin) and no, I didn't strictly follow the speed limit on some of the very empty stretches of excellent quality motorway :D

From Newlands Cross to Junction 28 (Castletroy exit) is about 1 hour 40 but depends on how long it takes you to get to the M7/M9 split. After that there's no hold ups at all. (And I usually stick just within the speed limit :) )

Driving at a speed unsuited to the road and conditions kills.

Many would argue that our new motorways are more then capable of handling higher speeds. In fact roads with the same spec in Germany would have no speed limit.

On the other hand driving legally at 80km/h on some country roads is suicide.

BTW anyone have stats for the number of people killed on Motorways? I can't think of any major news story about deaths on the new motorways, but remebeber plenty of stories over the last year of horrific deaths on country roads.

speeding is a road traffic offence could you just not drive at the limit the sign says like the other safe drivers?

And now aren't we allowed to discuss if the speed limits on our roads are reasonable or not?

I'd love to see the speed limit on the motorways increased or even removed, while the speed limit on crappy rural roads decreased.

It will go much further to saving lives then fatuously sticking to what we currently have.
