I run a mix of 53/39 and 52/39 on my 3 bikes (Junior gearing regulations) and you will hardly even notice a difference. If you find yourself spinning out (which you shouldn't as I have to use a cassette from 14 teeth up and am grand for all but the fastest decents) you could always get a cassette with slightly harder gearing to compensate!
