Dentist is suggesting a molar root canal, to be done in 1 hour from start to finish. Should I be suspicious, this seems a bit rushed. The root cause of my problem (pun intended) is an abscess & pulp decay.

not really, if it will take longer he/she can always stop and get you to come back for completion. or he/she can run over.

Got a root canal done today, and two other small fillings done in same sitting. Total time; 1 hour and a half. Looked a nice job from what i could see. 10 hours later,no pain/

although there was something strange he said when finished-i may start a new thread on this......
he said, after doing the root canal...that it won't last! There wasn't much left of the tooth, and while he did fill it,i will need a cap in the forseeable future...

I asked the price of that and was told 1000 euro!
My thinking here is...could he not have just done that in the first place??
I know its a little off topic, but any informed opinions? This is my first root canal, first fillings too, so new ground for me..

Yup, a few years ago I had a huge abscess and my tooth had pretty much eroded away. The dentist said root canal or get it removed. Then she said that having a root canal would be kind of pointless since I'd definitely have to have the tooth removed at some stage!!So from what I make out it's a pointless costly & sore procedure a lot of the time!

I book upper molars in for 2.5 hours and most lowers for 2hours if single visit, two 90 min appts if 2 visits required.

    the procedure itself shouldn't hurt.
every dentist should give you all the options available, whether it's root canal, extraction, or do nothing, then they have to advise you what they think is the best option for you, and then it's up to you, and only you to make your informed decision.
however, they can refuse to do the work if they don't think it's a good idea and refer you to someone else (@tiddlers, think you wanting a root filling after the dentist advising against). there has been the odd person who thought they'd choose the nothing option, but they came back the within the next few days.
@ frank, why did he say that at the end? can you give more info??
