You could try drilling it off with a small drill bit. I haven't seen rivited plates in a long long time. I use the double sided stickies available in Halfords. They're much neater than screws or rivets.

and much easier to steal...maybe thats not a problem here, but in the UK you would want to secure your plates so they are thief proof as its becoming quite a problem due to the restrictions in force on plate manufacture.
