    Hi,

My sister was working on her laptop today and came down to me with the screen as shown in the picture. I suppose it cannot be fixed without buying a new screen, (which i was quoted 240 euro for) and seeing as the laptop is 3 years old would I be better just telling her to buy a new one???

Graphics card problem, LCD screen is fine.

Is that big black line across the screen not a crack?

Try plugging in an external monitor to rule out a graphics card issue.

I'd agree, it looks like a crack on the screen - I've seen enoguh of them in work. The €200-€250 is the standard we'd get charged for replacing screens for laptops 2-3 years old.

As you say, you'd be as well going out and buying a new laptop instead, a couple more hundred would get you a decent one now-adays.

Thanks for all the replys, ye i taught when i first looked at it that it was a crack aswell but she said she didnt let it fall or anything so that why i taught it might be something else...

polyfusion, to check the graphics card i went to device manager-->Display adapters, that right?? it says here it is ATI Radeon Xpress Series.

The laptop is a dell inspiron 1501 by the way....

Screen for that laptop about €120 on ebay delivered and could be fitted in about 15 min if you knew anyone competent.

Looks like a crystal bleed alright but I'd expect somewhat different distortion past the bleed if it was the screen and not the GPU. Better hook up an external monitor. Just to be absolutely certain...

That's exactly what I thought when I first saw the image, about the distortion; uncertain now :o Connection to an external monitor is the only way to test. If it looks the same, the graphics card is faulty; if the monitor picture is perfect, then the LCD is faulty.

Just wanted to know the graphics card to see if there were reported issues with it, but haven't seen anything significant.

Yip it's cracked, you may notice liquid near the black diagonal line.

you can use it with an external monitor

easy enough to replace the screen if you know what you are doing and can track down one that was killed by someone spilling coffee on the keyboard

    where are you based ?

might have a similar screen knocking around, I'll need to look up the LCD type

yep get a cable to hook it up too a lcd monitor and it will work perfect then.

theres no point getting a new screen waste of money.

you;ll pick up a lcd monitor on adverts for 30euro

Thanks lads, can i ask ye what ye think of this laptop?? at dell for 399 euro...

    Intel® Celeron® Processor 900 (2.20 GHz, 1MB L2 Cache, 800MHz FSB)
    Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium 64bit- English
    15.6" Widescreen WXGA WLED (1366 x 768) TFT Display with TrueLife™

DVD +/- RW Drive (read/write CD & DVD) with DVD Burn software

Not to sure about the processor is a celeron crap?? for 499 euro would this be a better option to go for??

    Intel® Pentium® Dual-Core Processor T4400 (2.2GHz, 800MHz, 1MB cache)

go for the 2nd option, Celeron processors aren't that great. The 2nd spec looks good for the price, albeit, you are paying that wee bit extra for the Dell name and all

also, I wouldn't waste money buying McAfee on the laptop, I'd advise you to download AVG and Microsoft Security Essentials - both are free, and pretty good for anti-virus and spyware

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 139 ✭✭me1724

Ye i use AVG myself but the McAfee comes free with the package and cant take it off...

    you can add an
Intel® Celeron Dual Core T3100 (1.90 GHz, 800 MHz FSB, 1 MB L2 cache) to the first option for 45 euro, would this make any difference or is it just better to get the Pentium dual-core processor??

Like whats the advantages of Pentium over Celeron??

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 679 ✭✭✭polyfusion

I think this sums it up pretty well: http://www.howstuffworks.com/question268.htm

Avoid the Celeron if you're going to be using heavy-weight software, for example video editing and recent games, or like to multitask with gazillions of tabs open in a web browser.

So, OP, are you recommending your sis buys a new one ? I have one that won't boot up, but has a good screen AFAIK. Maybe we can do a deal, in either direction

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 139 ✭✭me1724

I repair LCD from laptops all the time,

Most of the time it is not worth buying a new laptop, most of the time people are happy with their laptop it does what they want i.e surf the web, show pics

Not all laptop users are gamers or business users, and seeing as most laptop screens can be replaced for appox €160 this is a lot cheaper than paying €400 - €600 for a new one that might get dropped the next day and break, and there is a 1 year warrenty on most of the screens I replace

PM me for any further info or help
