Training camp recommendation

    Hi all

I was due to fly out to Italy this Friday for a week training camp but because of work, it ain't happening. I'm disappointed but what can be done.

I would like to do a similar type thing later but it seems that I won't be able to go until May. I'm doing this Pyrenees challenge at the beginning of July (it's a multi-day challenge in the Pyrenees, it's being labelled as doing 5 l'Etapes in 6 days etc) so I don't want to leave it until June either, it's too near. I know (or rather I believe) March and probably April is the best time to go out in terms of training for the year. Do you think if May is too late to go on a training camp (purely from the perspective of this trip in July). If it is, I could use my annual leave for other adventures!! :D

Any ideas of a good/recommended training camps/multi-day sportives happening in May - mainly in Europe but I would look at elsewhere. Personally, if the (amateur) Tour of Ireland was still happening, I think it would be ideal, but it isn't so it isn't :D.

    Any advice/recommendations much appreciated.

I'm no expert but I would have thought that a training camp in May (or even June!) would be ideal as part of your training for the sportive in July...

May is a perfect time for a training camp for a peak of July. The important thing is to keep up and maintain and build on that for july when you get back.
As for where, why not the pyrenees themselves, somewhere like bagnere de bigorre (close to Tourmalet and other cols/climbs not too far away)
the tops of the biggest passes will probablt be inaccessible, but just go till you hit a roadblock

Alps is another one Bourg d'Oisans is a fantastic base for training camps (Ive done numerous training camps there over the years) its at the foot of alpe dhuez and there are LOTS of climbs inc the Galibier to train on

I would have thought that if you got in the training camp early, bring up your standard for the season and then you'd be flying it come July. But when it comes to cycling, I'm always ready to be corrected! :D

As for where, I might have a go at the Alps. I wouldn't go to the Pyrenees, as I'm sure once will be enough for 2010! I'd be interested in doing the Wessex event that Esroh mentioned, although that would mean I'd have to give the Mick Byrne a miss .

Anyone know a good website that I could be looking at??

I wouldn't rule out going to the Pyrenees, it can be good to have a taste before the main event. I know I appreciated having done all the climbs in the Marmotte before the day itself. When doing the Raid I met Paddy from www.velopeloton.com, very nice guy and very well situated for climbing. He posts on here occasionally under the name Velopeloton. Many of the higher passes in the Alps or Pyrenees will still be closed in May but there are plenty of roads that will be open, including anything that goes up to a ski station.

is that including the telegraph/galibier from bourg with an up over and back on the Galibier? or were you staying in a different base in the next valley over? (St Jean side)
