Will be in Stockhom for 5 days in late April.

Any suggestions? I'll have two kids with me, so not looking for bars or clubs. I would be interested in cafes, restaurants, shopping, parks, museums etc etc.

    any must dos?

    Where's the best coffee?

    What to buy there?

Might be worth checking http://www.gronalund.com/en/attractions/ for the kids.

It's near the Vasa Museum http://www.vasamuseet.se/InEnglish/about.aspx

Swedish coffee shops tend to be much better than their Irish counterparts so you should have no problems finding somewhere good.

    For adults and kids: http://www.skansen.se/pages/?ID=221

I agree that the Vasa Museum is a must.

The Vasa museum does look good. I think it's something both the kids and I would like. Perhaps I could use Grona Lund as a bribe for going somewhere more educational.

Does anyone know whether the restaurants there tend to be child friendly? They both know how to behave in restuarants and are used to eating out. I'd rather not spend the whole time eating in fast food places if I can help it, but I do know that in some countries people are not welcoming of kids in restaurants, even the kids are quiet.

Stella: I have also spent 10 days in Stockholm though it was in June.
Also echo what the others said about The Vasa Museum and Skansen.
They will love the small zoo in Skansen. Allow plenty of time to visit there. It's wonderful, (almost similar to Bunratty Folk Park), with some wonderful preserved buildings from Sweden and you get a chance to talk to people about Swedish life etc. Make sure to pick up some treats from teh old fashioned bakery. Yummy!!!

I recommend allowing plenty of time for The Vasa and try to get to see the short film in English before seeing the boat. It's one of my favourite museums I have ever visited! The children will certainly be impressed with it!

I would also recommend the "Music Museum". It's great for children and the Money Museum" may also be interesting to children. We enjoyed it :)

You may be interested in taking a boat trip to Birka from Stockholm (a UNESCO viking island). We got a beautiful sunny hot day to visit and it was one of the highlights of our trip. the scenery out is stunning and we got a guided tour of the island. There is a small visitor centre there.

The Royal Palace is good and the palace museum has some interesting things on display. the children might be interested in the "changing of the guard" which is very colourful and very enjoyable ( as long as it's not too cold).

I can't really advise on restaurants though as we were self catering!

    Hi,

Coffee wise there is a lot of places around however some of the best coffee I find is by a chain store Espresso house. They are dotted around the city. The other chains I am not a fan of and often I find the coffee in the smaller cafes rather poor though the food/cakes would be better.

I believe this has opened up recently http://www.globearenas.se/en/skyview.aspx at the Globen arena. (Green line south stop at Gullmarsplan or Globen). I've not been on it yet but it might be fun.

I really like the pasta (specifically carbonara) at http://www.afternoon-tea.se/meny2.htm slightly outside town (Green line north to odenplan)

Large selection of beers and decent food at http://www.monkscafe.se/. I prefare the one on Sveavagen.

Shopping wise you will find plenty near the main square - Sergel Torg. Including the Gallerian center and the Ahlens and NK department stores.

The weather should have picked up by then and the bear cubs should be around in Skansen.

    Enjoy!
