I'm fairly interested in Aviation and have been hearing a lot about this Hanger 6 argument, i have a question that i think some1 in this forum would know the answer to.

MOL says he'll create 300 jobs if he gets Hanger 6, how big is the thing and how many planes can it hold? I was of the understanding a Hanger was used to do maintenance on an aircraft, if so how will he create 300 jobs :confused:

I think this is it. http://www.bing.com/maps/?v=2&cp=sx4fy9ggdfxt&scene=29499395&lvl=1&sty=b I'm not sure how far it extends.

I understand it can hold two A330s and/or a combination of other aircraft. "2 Boeing 747 Jumbo Jets plus 5 Boeing 737s" http://www.cbre.ie/ie_en/news_events/news_detail?p_id=4028

His theory is that more maintenance would be done in Dublin.

If you look at victors link and view the other side of the hangar (cant link to it for some reason) you can see theres 4 storeys of offices as well.

After the quote about 2 747s from the second link above, it says " in addition to the associated office space for ~350 people."

I wouldn't say that is too accurate Victor.

    I would say it could two b747 jumbos or 5 x737s, not 800s mind you 3s 4s and 5s.

    I'm open to correction though.

    Main point is I couldn't see it holding two x 747 and 5 x 737

Agreed. Even with wings creatively arranged under taller wings etc it just doesn't seem to work :)

I think somebody needs to draw us a diagram in CAD and fit all those planes in there for us.

160 meters facing the apron with big doors and 105 meters deep - this is measured with google earth but should be close enough.

Actually, the 2x747 + 5x737 is pretty much correct. With the 747's pulled up in their staging there was plenty of room behind for more a/c. Back in 2003'ish I was in there with 2xA330, 2x767 (1 on C Check, 1 AOG,) 1x737, a 146 with an engine change & I think an Air contractors 727 was in there too. Don't think the AOG 767 had it's tail fully in though. But with planning/creative towing there was still room for more.

A Major spacesaver in Hangar 6 was that the 2 widebody bay tail docking were suspended from the ceiling freeing up quite alot of floorspace.

What many observers, including members of the Dáil Committee, fail to grasp is the actual functionality of Hangar 6.

Mythago`s quoted point above is EXACTLY why Ryanair is placing such emphasis on Hangar 6 as opposed to the other older units allegedly being offered as 2nd best choice.

It`s all about design functionality and the ability to FULLY utilize those design aspects resulting in maximum efficiency, which is an O Leary speciality.

Nothing that Christophe Mueller has outlined allows me to believe that Aer Lingus will ever achieve more than 50% max occupancy of Hangar 6...unless they are contemplating re-entering the world of Contract Maintenance in a big way....
