Dragstar engine problems

Hi, my Yamaga Dragstar 250cc starting acting up on Monday and was way down on power. Got a guy to take a quick look on my way home and he said the rear cyclinder isn't working.

Dropped it into bike shop in Dublin today and got quote for full strip down and repair of 600-900 depending whether piston, etc are replaced with new or s/h parts. Unfortunately, my prayers for it to be something simple weren't answered! Does this quote seem reasonable.
Its 2002 and I was considering changing anyway so I'm inclined to just trade it in non-running, rather than spend money on it and def not get money back.

Anyone any recommendations for replacement? I like the cruiser style so would like to stick with it. Considering 650 dragster but heard they are under powdered for weight.
    cheers

Is that a quote for what's ACTUALLY wrong with it, or, what MAY be ? If it's the actual cost, tbh, unless you love the bike, and it's in good condition otherwise, probably not worth fixing. But I'd need to know more.

As for the 650 - it's still more power than the 250, and has a good rep for reliability. Nice bike.

Look at it this way, my H-D is 330kg and has only....60bhp ?

We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

I`m always on my guard when I hear of machines developing symptoms like paschcom`s which rather quickly develop into Full Stripdowns.

Without second guessing from afar,I`d suggest doing a few simple checks your self first, such as changing a spark-plug or even looking closely at your carb linkage while you or an assistant twist the throttle.

Sometimes a loose bracket or a dodgy plug lead is all it takes to duff-out a cylinder.

Hope its NOT a Full Stripdown !!

Men, it has been well said, think in herds; it will be seen that they go mad in herds, while they only recover their senses slowly, and one by one.

Thanks AlekSmart - I agree totally, and while I admit I know very little about bike engines, I know enough to ensure the simple stuff is eliminated first. They checked the plug and other external stuff and there's still no compression.

However, rather than spend several hundred more on it, I'm going to trade it as is, and go for something more reliable.

Saw a nice Kawazaki VN900 with low mileage. Anybody any experience of these? How do they compare with Dragstars or Shadows?

Alternatively, in a totally different direction, I've seen a Kawazaki Versys 650. Probably more practical for commuting, and don't look half bad compared with Vstrom or Transalp. I hadn't actually seen one of these around before, so know v very little about them. Any thoughts?
