Conflict of Interest

Where I work the deputy manager is the union rep and also has a sibling who is a junior member of staff

I find this to be an unbelievable situation. Its a small workgroup of 25ish and the issues that arise are too inumerable to mention.

When approached to resign her position as Union Rep she said she would if someone would replace her. No one did funnily enough as she was still the dep boss

    Any thoughts/advice?

shes a manager and shes supposed to represent the employees for a start.

If i had a grievance I should go to my rep ? What if I had a grievance against her?

    go above her.

She manages you. Someone manages her

this has been going on for years. Shes using both sets of 'power' to compliment the other. My manager is understandably worried about her influence in the union and wants to keep her sweet.

I thought management couldn't be in unions! Maybe I'm wrong.

Is she elected as a rep? Why don't you just elect someone else?

I do agree it's unusual for a deputy manager to keep the reps role, and could well lead to issues. Surprised she's not been pressured from above to give it up. OTOH, ye're into "social partnership" in this country, which is really strange IMHO and waters down what the unions can achieve.

(I did three years as an elected rep: best management training ever, IMHO. I advised eejits who so deserved to be fired, but couldn't be because their bosses had f*cked up and so they had a wonderful PG to take if anyone ever tried to act against 'em. Very much an eye-opener.)
