Came across this interesting archived forum thread from 2001 discussing Apple's wierd new gizmo as it was being unveiled.

I thought it was interesting seeing the nature of a lot of the posts mirror those today on the Internet concerning the iPad and how it's not what people wanted to be announced and it'll never sell. Internet forums really haven't changed in 10 years.

Funny to read some of the comments:
I'd call it the Cube 2.0 as it wont sell, and be killed off in a short time...and it's not really functional.

    How wrong they were.

I was actually in the guinness storehouse when they officially launched it in ireland. There was such a mixed reaction from all of us invited, some really got stuck in to apple at the launch saying it was lowering the brand and more or less pointless.

The over all reaction was that no one could reasonably expect consumers to 'rip' all their CD collection and add it to an ipod, it would be for the geeks only.

I more or less fell in love it with and bought one as soon as I could, a whopping 5gb.

Most people thought I was mad until they tried it out for themselves.

Wow, that's sorta crazy to read. People completely dissed it only for it to become huge.

Came across that link myself a few weeks back. I was unimpressed with the ipad announcement but still figured the iPad would be a success in the coming years. Reading that thread, couldnt help but feel a little deja vu. Hard to believe the reaction the iPod was so negative when you look at where it is now.

By the same token you could check out thread on the Hi-fi's announcement and the extremely negative reaction that got.

Wouldn't you just love to meet one of the negative posters on that thread remind them what they said. Especially if it was some guy who is ALWAYS right. Oh that would make my day ! :)

Great little find there, it was funny to see all the reactions of 'just a bloody MP3' player and 'just for geeks'. Who knew, eh? :D

The iPod didin't take anywhere near 10 years to go mainstream, so if the iPad does I doubt it will take anywhere near that either.

In fairness the 1st Gen iPhone was rubbish. The technology used was brilliant and unique at the time, but the specs were terible IMO. That's why Im not buying into the iPad hype. While I know it is a great product and it will sell loads, the iPad can only get better (and cheaper). I've invested in First Gen products before and never again will I.

iPad will be a roaring success , I want one , but I won't be opening my wallet for it til around 3rd gen release.
