Quick question re: selling a car

My sister is selling her micra for a few hundred quid, and has two viewers lined up for this evening.

If one of them decides to take it tonight, is it OK to ask for some sort of ID for the change of ownership form? She would be sending the form off herself; we're just wondering if there is any need to make sure it's a real name and/or address that it's being registered to - or is that none of her concern?

i've done that when selling cars before, usually drivers license. I just say i need it to copy their details for the log book. No-one's ever taken offence.

Eoin, just make sure your sister does this herself. Don't let her sell the car and give the buyer the log book for him/her to do as they could keep the car in your sister's name and get her fines and penalty points etc.

As for ID, driver's license would do the trick.

As long as she send off the log book it shouldn't matter what details the person writes or if they're telling the truth...

Thanks - definitely making sure that she sends off the VLC herself. I think the viewers aren't Irish, so there won't be an address on their driving licence, but hopefully it should all be fine.

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

It's none of her concern. Who cares if the new owner is called "Michael Mouse"? :D

Just make sure that she will post it.

Edit: must type faster, beaten to it :D

Cheers. Yep, I've made it very clear she's to do that herself.

It would annoy me if someone actually asked for ID. I wouldn't want someone I didn't know having a copy of my drivers license lying around their house!

No one aver said anything about copying it; write the details onto the logbook in the presence of the buyer and had the license back to them.

Yeah, I can understand that. Wouldn't take a copy of it, just transpose the details on to the VLC. Though I've moved house at least 4 times from the address that's on my DL, so I guess that mine wouldn't be much use if someone asked for it.

It's up to the buyer to fill in their details, not the seller!

I know. I was just wondering if there is any need on my sister's side to check that the details are genuine. It looks like there isn't any need, so we'll just make sure it's filled in and sent off.

Another MAKE sure she posts it, the brother just got caught for a few toll fee's and fines from a fella who he thought was genuine.

Money + Jimmy Crack Corn on the log book + car gone = Happy days:)

Did your brother not write the date of sale on the form? Bit silly to leave this to the buyer...

Well, car is sold - only went up on donedeal this afternoon. Goes to show what a difference it makes when you set a realistic price.

Anyway, the buyer tried to get my sister to give him the cert to fill out and send off himself, but she stuck to her guns and it's all sorted.

He did, but if the form wasn't sent off how could it be recorded that it's not in his name? He did fill out a "Declaration" form and sent it to Shannon saying he sold the car and was no longer the owner.
