Looking to change my Petrol 206 to a Diesel car

Alright lads! Need a bit of help/advice from the Motors forum :D

I've been driving a 2001 1.4 GLX Pug 206 since September, but the cost of petrol is killing me nowadays, €50 a week at a minimum, driving from Bluebell to UCD and to work in Kilcullen.

I'm thinking of selling it, or trading it in or whatever, and getting a more fuel efficient car like a diesel. My budget for a new motor (preferably not French) would only be around €3000, providing I can get rid of the 206, could probably sell it for €1500-ish. The main problem for me would be paying for the tax on the bigger diesel engine.

Any advice would be much appreciated :D

    Cheers,
    Anto

There are a few small capacity diesel engined cars out there.

    Ford Fiesta 1.4 TDCi:
    Fiat Panda 1.3 Multi-jet
    Opel Corsa 1.3 CDTi,
    Toyota Yaris/Corolla 1.4 D-4D
    Seat Ibiza/VW Polo 1.4 TDi

Unfortunatley small diesel cars are relatively scarce and expensive in Ireland so I'm not sure you will find a decent one on your budget.

BTW did you have a mechanic check the 206 in the event there is something not right with it?

You'll be knocked with motor tax but it's a solid engine.

Whats wrong with the french? The hdi is a good diesel :)

The hdi is a good diesel? I didn't know that, I just always hear people saying French cars are bad blah blah blah

Yeah, cheaper tax then. Saw a Golf TDi and a 306 diesel van, would they be decent yeah?

Cheers bazz. Yeah I'm bringing it to the mechanics on Saturday to have it fully checked!

I could probably get a 1.6 or 1.7 as the difference in tax wouldn't be that much.

How much do you intend to spend to save the difference between that €50 per week and what you will spend on diesel? I'm assuming that your fuel bill will be halved, say €25 diesel per week, that's an optimistic saving of €1300 per year, less increased tax and possibly insurance, less cost of new finance. I can't see a huge saving anywhere?

Good point Hagar. Maybe a small 1.0 litre Micra or something would be cheaper?

That €50 a week is usually just a minimum tbh, I usually end up spending €70-80, which is half my wages per week!

there's one car that is both cheap and cheap to run, which might suit, and isn't too high-tech to maintain, either: Citroen Saxo 1.5d

    65-70mpg all day.

You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”
