Yes and no. Yes happy about president, VP Comms, Pats and finance.

Not happy that I wasn't let in to the count. At one point I contemplated dropping in to the room mission impossible style, then realised that that would literally be impossible because the venue doesn't have ceiling windows (as it is a dank hole).

Even though I didn't get it, and am a bit disappointed, I can't believe what a strong exec we are going to have! I'm still thrilled about the USI result- although the no side never stood a chance. Although I'm going to get virtually stabbed for saying this (BRING IT!) the no campaign was deplorable.

    :) *BOO!*

princess_calico, I thought your campaign was great and as I said on Facebook very upbeat and positive. Even if the odd grumpy sh/te did complain about the soundsystem in the JH ;)

That's life sadly, and how it goes.

You can't predict SU elections, you just can't. I thought Gavin and Obama would be a much closer race than it was, and Rob was sh/tting bricks over his race too. I called Irish completely wrong, and in all honesty we only broke our balls so much over USI as we thought we were looking at a 55/45. You never know how it'll go.

I seen the one who ran for ents who had that topless ad, she's not as hot in person. This is my contribution to exam results

    Wins the thread.

Anyone else looking for blue-tack around the house? It'll always be ents election day in my house.

That statement appears to make no sense. Although that may be because I'm high on frickin pills at the moment. Not actual pills, medicinal ones.

Someone take me away from my laptop.

*not literally, that'd be weird. You can't take the Proc down for anything. I'll need to find another space;)

The more time that passes, the better I'm feeling about conceding defeat. I know, last night I was an absolute mess. It was so hard seeing Rob and Aengus, 2 great friends, get elected and be coming 3rd. But hey, so is life.

I know, I'm leaving Maynooth knowing the SU will be in great hands with these two candidates. It would've been better with me, but I'm sure you'll all be happy with Liz.

Oh, and FYI, I officially depise the slow process that is PR-STV......the politicos know what I mean

For normal people, that's Proportional Representation by means of a Single Transferable Vote, which I think is a great system.

It's good, but it makes counting so much more longer to go through.

    I'm a lazy man, I know:P

Technically you got the highest number of 1st preference votes ever but you were pretty much uncontested. Aengus on the other hand, got 50% of 1st preference votes in a race with 5 candidates.... that to me is WAAAAY more impressive! :D

    Well done Aengus!

I love PRSTV, I'm a total nerd when it comes to electoral theory!

For the sake of completeness here's the exact vote record.

Finally, someone who shares my enthusiasm. At least you were in the room :(. I spent about 6 hours with my ear to the door. I heard Pat get elected, I heard Declan get elected, and then I realised that actually I could get a better overview of what was going on online... which was kind of sad.

</ moaning about not getting into the count. Moaning on boards anyway.>

I was right about Liz being to be elected without reaching the quota. And I almost called welfare right based on the size of the piles while sorting . Welfare's kind of interesting - it was *quite* close for Lydia. I kind of fancy her chances if they get a revote, but I don't know if that's going to happen.

Also, I would like to add to anything I have said about Liz that was slightly mean with this: just because I would never go to her with a problem clearly doesn't mean other people won't. I was unduly harsh. I have since heard from a couple of friends that she has genuinely helped a lot of people who have gone to her about their welfare. And she did lobby for the ESF (european structual funding) to be opened up to all students next year, which will be good for most students who need financial help, even if it does effect the current recipients adversely... I don't know if she actually got it opened, I haven't heard, but it wasn't a bad idea.

Liz may not be pro-USI, she may not be particularly sympathetic to the labour movement, but 2 of the 3 sabbats next year are, so hopefully she'll be outvoted on those issues, and can stick to what she's good at. And even though she now has experience in the job, I hope she will avail of any training the USI would care to offer her, such as Pink training, so that she can help people with their welfare better still next year.

Rob, everyone else is still damn proud of you! That's some achievement!

Am I wrong in saying that having an opponent is considered running contested- not uncontested? I don't know... Maybe I'm just thick when it comes to politics? But I'm pretty sure that having two people running for the same position means that there is competition?

well freakin done! Aengus fair f*cks to you too!

Gemma does politics, she would know.

In fairness to circa1990, she did say "pretty much uncontested" not just "uncontested".

And in fairness to Rob, he didn't run "pretty much uncontested", Tuohy was a worthy opponent with a strong campaign and for circa1990 to come on boards and try to belittle Rob's achievement seems pretty mean-spirited to me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 433 ✭✭CnaG

Not sure it was an attempt at belittlement really, she seemed just to be saying that Aengus' achievement was more impressive because he had more opponents, not that Rob's was unimpressive. I'd say both results were impressive personally. But then I generally like the fence :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 433 ✭✭CnaG

Incidentally, I notice that Declan only got 10 or so fewer first preferences than Rob. Was Rob's highest score the proportion of votes he got, or the actual number of votes he got? Just asking to see if Declan held the record for highest number of first preferences until Comms was counted. Would suck if he did, and the Rob broke it what, 2 hours later? :)

Declan: highest number of first preference votes. Rob, two hours later, got 11 more.

But student elections are silly. Some girls told me today they voted for me because I was the only one on the ballot paper that was smiling.
