    Hi,

Has anyone here ever changed there name by Deed Poll? How Is It done? what does it all involve.... Changing passport, driving licence, bank cards ETC......

The sirname Fiennes has plagued me forever! at school the smart ass kids called me "Hitlers Bitch" because they said it was a German name and as an adult I keep getting asked if I am related to the Actors Ralph and Joseph Fiennes! ( I'M NOT!!!!!). The final straw was a while ago when I checked In with some friends on a long haul flight and the check in clerk looked at my passport and joked that I should maybe give using the toilet during the flight a miss!!! My friends where dying laughing at this, but I didn't get it until they filled me in on Ralph Fiennes scandle when he joined the mile high club with one of the air hostess.

    Help:(

Well I've never changed my name but really... Fiennes? You could do so much much worse. I also have a foreign surname which I was teased for - but as an adult I enjoy it because it sounds distinguished - remember people who ant to cut you down will find any excuse! Unless your name is Jordan Sharon Tanya Tracy you should just grow into it. I only ever heard of one family where a name change was justifiable - their name was Death and they changed it to Deeth a generation or two ago. And then there were the Ramsbottoms. I don't know what they're calling themselves these days.

Fiennes is nice. What on earth do you plan to plan to replace it with?

    Yours truly,

    Xxxx Mordechai

Poor OP! I have a surname that no-one can pronounce and a not-so-common-in-Ireland first name that's the same as a famous person so I'm constantly hearing the same 'oh so hilarious' jokes

Don't lose your individuality though by giving up your very name!! I find that giving the offending eejit the dead-eye stare usually stops them in their tracks!

Once you have the offical document which says your name has been legally changed you can then start getting your passport and other documents changed.

Heh my buddies name is Austin Power so you got off lightly. Don't change your name. You'll regret it when you are older.

It is an original name which have shaped who you are.

I wouldn't change your name. Sure it makes you stand out a small bit, but if one thing has been proven through they years I'd remember any of my old classmates that had a foreign or distinguishable name a lot more than I remember the Smiths or O'Connors etc. Be proud of it, and make it a feature of who you are rather than something you are ashamed of.

How old are you OP? By all means change your name by deed poll, but a name can be a two edged sword. You've got the rough end of the stick, but in some occupations, the right name can open doors that remain closed to those of us with more unremarkable names.

OP, I've looked into it as I plan on changing my name with my partner when we get married (to a new name, as opposed to my partner's name). I found that the Citizen's Information website was very comprehensive.

Just be conscious though, that people who grew up with you (family, old friends etc) will more than likely still refer to you by your birth surname. It will be very hard for them to use your new name- it won't leave you altogether.

So you're old enough to know what you want and you've probably thought about changing your surname for a good while. I don't think that Fiennes is a bad surname. I'd be proud to have the same surname as explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes even if I wasn't related to him in any way. If it were Hitler or Fritzl I wouldn't blame you wanting to change it.

It's all down to you and what you want. Maybe the surname Fiennes doesn't sit well with you and the people you hang out with and you would be happier with something like Finn. What would your family think about your changing your surname?

The last post really drove it home. I thought I was going to read a thread posted by someone called Fritzl or Hitler or Ramsbottom. WTF is wrong with Fiennes. The final straw was the airline thing?? Jaysus you are thin skinned. I was sure you were going to say you were 16 years old or something. Cop on mate!!

"Yeah, dad. I hope you don't mind, I don't like our name, some kids slagged me 15 years ago and a flight attendent made a topical quip about my name. Its made my life so hard. You don't mind if the rest of your descendants forever more are called smith or jones do you?"

If I was called Fiennes, I would actually have been the one to make the quip about me name. "Can I get a window seat besides the toilet please :D ", I'd actually be disgusted if they didn't get the joke and get a laugh out of it. Maybe thats just my self deprecating self of humour.

So my advice is to cop the **** on

No its not my Name that has made my "life of hard" as you put it! It was more my parents death in a car crash 9 months ago! so I won't have the chance to say "Dad I hope you don't mind but I don't like our name" as you put it. Yes I'm thin skinned because of the teasing and what happened to my parents last year and I wanted advice because I'm an only child and I want a fresh start. I didn't come on here to be abused by a hater like you

Are you talking to anyone right now? A bereavement councilor?
Life must be so difficult for you right now. Especially with no siblings to share the burden.

I've changed my name by deed poll, it was a simple process. A visit to the solicitor and an afternoon filing papers in the four courts.
At the end of the day, a name is just a word on a piece of paper.
I can't help wondering though, if when you start to have a family of your own.
That you will regret losing that small connection to the generations before.

I just want to move on and start fresh.

I changed mine by deed pole about 10 years ago. Just went into my family solicitor and signed some forms. No idea how much it cost though. My parents were dealing with him at the time and settled the bill for me.

Sorry to hear about your parents' death. Have a few sessions with a bereavement counsellor before doing anything drastic.
