    Hi guys,

I am moving back to ireland soon, and was wondering if you still need that ugly box to decode ntl or can i get the digital channels directly on my TV since its dvb-c tuner included?

    Thanks

You have to use the equipment provided by Chorus NTL/UPC

Why is it then that my girlfriend's father can receive some of the NTL channels on his Sony TV that haven't been encrypted?

It's possible to do so and I've even heard of some people using a legitimate card in a Nagra CAM to receive the channels without the box. But it's against UPC's terms and conditions to use equipment other than that which is sanctioned by UPC. The new UPC Mediaboxes are much better than the old NTL ones though.

    Are they analogue or digital?

The Thomson DVR supplied by UPC is appalling. It is possibly their worst ever.

    Digital.

You can watch RTE and city channel unencrypted aswell as Sky News and a few other random channels.

I can get the full EPG too and see which channels are encrypted.

As you are paying for the Analog service already I imagine this may be an exception.

The tuner is built into your TV you are not trying to hook up suspect equipment.

Now as regards the encrypted channels as far as I know the box and the card must be paired.

UPC will only pair a card to one of their boxes.

Some channels are in the clear but not because they're meant to be. Probably more like technical error or laziness. Didn't know about the DVR, I only have the standard UPC box.

No I think I'm being misunderstood.

When I switch the TV to 'digital' (UK freeview) I can receive some of the unencrypted channels on the NTL Digital network. Without a CAM or anything like that... the only NTL receiver that's in my GF's house is upstairs in her room...

Doesn't make alot of sense to me as the only Digital TV I can receive through my own TV in my own house are the RTENL tests being broadcast down analogue...

It's odd that something that claims to be a Freeview receiver can receive unencrypted DVB-C cable broadcasts, but it does happen.
I don't think you were misunderstood - other people were saying some people have managed to get encrypted channels working on their TV's tuner using a CAM and other trickery, but this is something you're not supposed to be doing. Receiving clear channels like you are is more of a grey area.

Digital TV being broadcast "down analogue"? I think you mean terrestrial :)

Erm... ok well through the cable that I'd usually pick up analogue TV through in my own house I can pick up the RTENL tests going on at the minute.

Does that make it a bit more clear?

So you probably have an aerial on your roof with this cable connected to it? You are probably getting the DTT channels.

Leaky cable maybe? That is odd though.

I am on my own tv.. there's no antenna on the roof.

It's just standard analogue (with NTL digital and broadband) coming into the house but my TV does pick up the RTENL transmissions from it.
