Protein shake for weight loss

    Hi everyone - I just have a quick question. will taking a protein shake after training prevent me from losing weight - our football team at the moment supplies us with a shake mixture to be taken after training that has 5g of creatine and 5g of lucozine. I understand its for recovery but i still need to lose about 5kg. would i be better off not eating anything after training as it is usually over b 9pm.

    Hi There

    This question comes up quite a bit :)

    There is a really simple equation to losing weight. You simply expend more calories per day than you consume. Once you follow this rule you will lose weight.

    A protein shake is a food source. It provides calories derrived from protein, some carbs and maybe a little fat.

    As long as you
    1. Know what your maintenance calorie figure is
    2. Are eating between 300-500 calories per day below your maintenance figure
    3. Count the number of calories provided by the protein shake in your daily total (maintenance - (300-500 calories))
    Then taking the protein shake after training will not hinder you in your goal of losing weight, and it may actually help you recover quicker from your training.

    I also train (weights or cardio) at night after work, between 18:00 and 20:00 and don't get home from the gym until around 21:15. I have a protein shake before showering at the gym and a dinner consisting of a protein source (meat/fish) and green veg at home around 21:45 before bed, and I have no problem dropping weight when I want. Once I eat below my maintenance figure.

    Thanks man - yeah i know the basics re weight loss and you answered my second question before i asked :) i.e. which is better after training - a protein shake or a solid meal like fish / chicken.

    What are peoples opinions on having a protein shake pre/during workout so physiologically it can be hitting the cells directly after training??

    I have the protein shake and the solid meal of meat/fish & veg after training :)

    As soon as I hit the locker room straight after training I have a shake. Then when I make it home I will have a dinner.

    The main point is that a proitein shake will neither hinder or help you lose weight. It's just another form of food. Once you count the calories it provides in yoru daily total and are eating a calorie deficit each day, then you should lose weight.

    +1, also protein satisfies hunger very well so you should be less likely to snack. I drank them while losing weight. I am currently dieting so drinking them more.
