Car tax question

    Hi all,

My current car's tax is due for renewal on the 1st of March, however I am waiting for a new car to be delivered. I should have it early in March. What should I do in case I get stopped in my current car in March? I'm hardly going to tax it for 3 months (which I think is the minimum)!

    Thanks in advance.

You can tax your car for three months.
Why would you not bother taxing it? We can't all take that attitude with not paying tax if we don't feel like it.

I wouldn't bother you get 3 months grace with tax before they'll do anything serious if you're stopped 1-2 weeks with out tax and you'll be fine if you are stopped just do as the first poster said and say that it's in the post.

It has to be out 2 months before they can take the car. It used to be 3 months but the feckers changed that.

op you will be fine within the month, even if you are stopped, which is very unlikely, they will almost definitely ignore it when its within one month. I don't see why anybody would expect you to pay 3 months tax for the sake of even a month.

No doubt there will be plenty here on the high horses though.

Either way sure you'll be paying for a full tax month on the new car for march, why pay twice?-

I think you should have read my post in more detail before getting on your high horse. Why would I tax a car for 3 months when I'll only have it for max 2 weeks, as others have said, I'll be taxing my new car for the whole month of March.

To the other posters, thanks for the replies, think I'll just say I was alway on holidays and I'm waiting for the disc.;)

i would not bother to tax it, but you might get a bit more money and interest in the car when you go to sell it if people see that it is taxed

When you read the renewal notice is states "Application is made prior or during" and then the month from whne hte tax starts is printed, therefore, you are not breaking any laws by not taxing it until the last day of march...

For some reason, I thought you were taking ownership of the new car in July.
Good grief, my eyesight must be going!

    Sincerest apologies! :o

I'm off to look for a stool to help me climb down off the horse!

That's not the law, that's simply telling you you can use the form once application is made in that period. Go outside of the month and you have to pay arrears so the form can't be used :)

Surprised a correction took so long. What I meant is the OP will probably not get a fine for the tax only being out fromt he end of the previous month. If he did get a fine this could be dropped once he taxes the car same day.

Not really. There is a fine non display of tax and a separate fine for not having tax. The non display can't be quashed by paying the tax later.

You actually can still renew online after the month is up using the form you just have to pay the months arrears

There's enough out there that will have many more things to keep the Gardai busy. I think the most you'll get if you were stopped is a "get your tax sorted" comment & that would be it.

It's called Common sense. If you tax you car last day of 1 mont, online or via snail mail, you will not have it back for 3 - 4 days at least. Since you are allowed use the renewal notice the same month, most Guard's would use COMMON SENSE and not fine you, but as Rebel states tell you to get it sorted.

The fine can be quashed if you have paid the Tax the same day you got the fine, I was told this by a Guard who gave me a ticket when my car was out 6 weeks and oarked on a mian street. I paid the back tax, which I was going to do anyway and also paid the fine, as I was unable to Tax the car that day.

    It's called Common sense.

If one was using common sense you'd tax your car so you always have a current disc on display.
