Sargent resigns as Minister of State

"Former Green Party leader Trevor Sargent has resigned Minister of State in the Department of Agriculture after accepting that he made 'an error of judgement' in contacting gardaí about a case involving a constituent."

"The Dublin North TD and former Green leader told the Dail he wrote to gardai investigating an assault case on behalf of a constituent as a prosecution was pending.
Mr Sargent said he would quit his post at the Department of Agriculture over the affair but insisted he did not believe he had broken any law."

So one more gone, does it look like the last days of the current government?

Many suspect FF has just gotten their revenge for the Greens pulling support for O'Dea.
Great government we have isn't it! Nice, respectful and honourable.

I want to bring them anywhere in the world with me.
...And leave them fcukin' behind there!

Yeah, it's common TD's to write letters like that.

Fish & Chips is always a winner.

At least he went out doing something that he thought was morally if not ethically right. Refreshing compared to the other buffoons we are used to hearing about.

What's wrong with your Real Player? Just uninstall it and reinstall the free version.

Wow. He's pretty much resigning over nothing. What's next, Mary Coughlin resigns after ordering coffee instead of tea? I mean come on, is resigning from office in fashion these days or something? He must have seen all the support O'Dea has been getting since he quit and thought "ME TOO!"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,349 ✭✭✭✭super_furry

Much like Willie O'Dea he had to go thanks to his own stupid decisions. But unlike O'Dea at least he left with a bit of dignity and honour.

So basically lying ( Willie O'Dea ) or trying to interfere with a police investigation ( Trevor Sargent ) means you're unfit to be a Minister ( or Junior Minister ), but it's still ok to be a TD?

Both people have basically broken the law but that's ok for a TD, is it? Shows what a high standard we hold our TDs to...

Yeah you have a point but then you could probably get rid of half of them and the country would be overrun with by-electiobs which would piss everyone off

... and give them a nice leaving "office" bonus while they still have those TD seats! :(
What did O'Dea get just last week? €100,000! NICEEEE!

Now if they just leave the pitch, the public might win for a change!

The problem is look at the "alternative".

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

I'd vote for practically anyone who wasn't a politician before the election at this stage.

The next election could be a good one for newly emerging candidates.

Yea in the grand scheme of things it wasn't the worst mistake ever.

I smell a rat. Could it be a pre-emptive move to quell the emergence of more damning information? Seems like too little a faux pas for a minister to resign over....

(Don't get me wrong, I know what he did was "unlawful" but little facts like that don't usually have them running for the resignation letters).

Isn't that what they are already forcing the rest of the country into?
The last thing I want, is those muppets joining me there too. They are already on all our backs.

I really truly doubt that. It will be different and for a time will look like an alternative, but when it happens, look back on this post and see what I mean. The current crowd are just about running a píss up in a brewery, while operating a door policy, over charging and watering the beer. The other crowd(s)? They'll have trouble organising the píss up in the first place.

Yes but the only way to get either side to buck up and run our pissup well is to give them a chance, then kick them out if they fuk up and vice versa till one group realises if they want to keep the good paying job they better do it well.
