    Lads,

I am going to buy used car which is from northern ireland. To register it on my name do I really need to bring the car to the VRO office or I can go with just the form which is alredy signed by the owner so it just needs my signature on it?

    Thanks,

You need to bring the car, the V5 and the money.

its the big green form you get from the UK seller when you buy the car. its like half the VLC with all the car details on it.

    Hi Gumbo,

I don't think the owner has shown me the V5 form, can I register the car without V5? Is there any other alternative of V5?

    Thanks,

No, its proof you own the car!
if you have no V5 then you can apply for a new one from the UK DVLA but that will go to the registered owner, not you.

you cannot VRT a UK car without the V5.
how do you know the car your buying is not stolen if you haveent seen the V5?

have you done a HPI check on the car and double check all Vin numbers etc?

    are you buying private?
what car / price range are you buying?

do you know the seller or buying from a classified ad?

have you got a link to the car your thinking of?

I thought they didn't bother checking maistream stuff and only examined stuff like BMWs and Mercs for extras.

..indeed: you don't have to bring the car, but you have to be prepared to bring it for inspection, if requested.

OP - do not buy the car without bringing the V5 in your hands. I don't care what the seller says, if you're exporting the car, you get the V5. If the seller doesn't believe you - best to warn him in advance you'll be needing it - tell him to ring the DVLA in Swansea, to confirm.

I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

I VRTed three cars in the the last 2 years, 2 BMWs and 1 Audi, they didnt physically look at any of them. They really only do that if the VRT charge is high (usually the case on 4 year old and newer cars).

Well in my own experience having imported a '02 A4 just 3 weeks ago I drove to the Revenue office in the car, filled in the form there and parted with a cheque! (Only thing they take)...apart from Laser maybe? They never asked if I had it with me!.....Just park well away from the place and tell them you dont!;)

Imported a 02 BMW 320, two 98 A4's one quattro, one B6 A4 and 2 1.8TQS A6's in the last couple of years and the only car they checked was the 98 1.9TDI 90bhp just to check if it was 90bhp or 110bhp, I reckon if it was down as 110bhp they wouldn't have bothered to check.

But then again you never know, better to just have it with you to get everything sorted there and then, generally they don't try and charge you more especially if you have the bank draft made out etc.

Hi, Thank you all for letting me inform about V5, I clarified with the seller, he had V5 form, I have also done full history check of the car online. Report was positive. Regarding bringing car to VRO office, seller told that we need to convince the officer that I am not covered to drive the car yet so should not be an issue. I'll try without bringing car there. BTW I made the deal today and got the car it's peugeot 206 '04.

I seriously doubt they'll bother looking at an 04 206.

Would they need to look at a 09 SMAX ?

I went to Santry VRO office yesterday, it was very quick, just in 20 minutes I was out. Didn't bring the car.

Most of the VRO office's now have inspectors that do look at the car itself esp for any extra's (more money for them) but not all of the time....random checks done....I know the Sligo office do check....Did 4 out of the 5 times I cleared a car....Was only yhe capri they didn't look at it....

Any recommendations for sites to do a mainland UK vehicle check. Do they all do the same checks?

The AA is a good check (Data check) Havent used the full vehicle one, but if you buy the data check you get a discount on the full vehicle check

I never did history check before so cant say much. I did on motorcheck.ie
It gives you details on the following:
    Vehicle Details
    Write-Off Data
    EURO-NCAP Safety Rating
    Identification Numbers & Documentation
    Odometer Readings
    CO2 Rating
    Origin Data
    Owner(s)
    Vehicle Valuation
    Hire Purchase Information
    Manufacturer Recalls
    Previous Enquiries
    Stolen Vehicle Register
    Manufacturer Warranty

They require some input from us for acurate report, for example, Chassis No/VIN we need to give to verify against else it won't be displayed in the report.

In my case result of "Finance outstanding in UK" was Inconclusive, it was mentioned that it requires further investigation. So eventhough this was missing overall we get idea about the vehicle's genuinity from the history check.
