    Hi All,

I'm thinking of going interrailing for 2 weeks in Aug/Sep. I'm thinking of spending most my time in central/eastren Europe and staying in hostels. Does anyone have any recommendations on where to go, places to stay etc.??

I did eastern europe myself last year. The places id recommend going to are krakow, budapest, prague, and all of croatia as well. Ljubljana and bratislava are nice too, small and quite.

    Krakow - mosquito hostel

Budapest - Maverick hostel + aventura hostel

    Zagreb - Funk Hostel

Doing a loop into Romania from Hungary would be worth it.

Timisoara, Oradea, Cluj, Sibiu, Sighisoara, Brasov. Apart from Oradea all of those towns are worth a nights stay. They should all have budget accomodation.

If your are in Timisoara or souther Hungary (Szeged, Pecs) it's possible to reach the Serbian towns of Subotica, Novi Sad, Belgrade, Smederevo and Nis.

Note this is all western Romania, mostly Transylvania. That area is really worth seeing, +1 from me. I would not recommend venturing further east in Romania though unless you are looking for some serious adventure.

For mine we kept it simple enough. Prague, Krakow, Bratislava, Vienna, Munich. Was meant to finish in Rome but were burnt out and blew a lot of cash in Vienna and Munich. Very little spent up till then.

As for hostels, the best i've ever stayed in was in Krakow, the Kadetus Hostel, very central, cheap and very VERY well laid out, almost like a hotel. The rest:
    • Prague: Hostel Tyn, cheap, very central and average quality.
    • Krakow: Hostel Giraffe, wouldn't stay there again, very loud and busy, too much of a "nightlife" to it, hard to sleep and very hot in the summer. Moved to Kadetus.
    • Bratislava: Wasn't mad on it, nice for two nights, bit dead. Stayed in Hostel Possonium, a mile from the city centre, but actually had the best craic in it's own Hostel-themed underground bar (as in the film - freaky!). Cheap and clean and very social.
    • Munich: Great city, would loved to have stayed there longer. Expensive though, but only around Dublin prices. Stayed in A&O City Hauptbahnhof Muenchen, would NOT recommend, they messed up our booking with the wrong room type and very expensive. For location though, its very good, right by the train station and a 10 minute walk to Marienplatz.

That's my bit anyway, give a shout if you want any more detail. Oh and the Lonely Planet "Europe on a Shoestring" guide is a lifesaver, try get it second-hand!

Thanks for the advice guys. It makes for some interesting reading. I'll probably stick to the more obvious places on this occasion as I haven't been to any of them before. It beats the hell out of a boring sun holiday!

Another school of thought is that it is not critical to visit Munich, Krakow (say) as you can get a direct flight there any weekend, which would be cheap enough if you book ahead. But Kosice, Cluj, Subotica, etc would have to visited by train in any case, if you don't do these on an Interrail you may never see them. Also Prague, Munich etc need a few days to see properly, the smaller places can be seen in a day or two.
