hello. just wondering what age a bull is good to work to.

my bull is hitting for 6 or 7 years old - limousine. He is in good nick physically. I plan to put him with about 10 cows and 10 heifers all running together.

Will he be up to it?

ya if in good shape physically he should be fine, once we had a charolais bull for over 10 years and he had to do each winter on slats and looked after more cows than that..it was the feet that went for a finish, the last bull didnt last half as long so it varies from animal to animal

my present limousin is 10 and in good nick, however he is a homebred bull and was never force fed when he was younger, IMO this has a huge bearing of the mileage you will get out of an animal, either male or female

I have my buck about 5 years now. he wasn't force fed until last winter when I was going to sell him. I was giving him 25lbs bull nuts for about 3 months and he was almost fit but he got a touch of pneumonia and I stopped feeding him for a while and then changed my mind re selling him as hoping to keep him now.

would the feeding at this stage have any effect.

My uncle is getting rid of his Belgian Blue bull this year at 13 years old. i think the reason that he is so old is probably because he is the nicest bull in the world. Bought him at 9 months and you can sit on his back if you wanted to.

He is 75% BB and 25% Limo and he brings great calves. pity he cant live forever.

He serves around 35 cows during the summer. He is fed meal before he goes out though so he is in very good shape.

Sounds like my uncle's Belgian Blue. Both breeds on average are very docile anyway

I have the answer to the question now.

A bull is "past it" when he no longer meets the standards required by your herd

"what age is a bull past it?"

When he won't look in a mirror in the light of day, swear he died it when his hair turns grey, when he zips up his trousers and his belly's in the way........
