Collecting old Photographs - CDVs, Cabinet Cards etc

I like collecting history of photography items:

Victorian CDVs (Carte de Visite) and Cabinet Photos
Stereographic images viewable on Holmes type stereoscope. That sort of thing.
I would like to get some daguerreotypes as well.

Are there any good shops or places to look (I know about ebay already :p)?

Sometimes the antique fairs have CDVs and stereoscope images.

    Anybody else here collecting similar?

For your stereoscopic images, there's a fantastic place halfway down Portobello Rd in London, it has literally hundreds of them to browse through. If you're heading over, let me know, and I'll give you a bit more detail!

I collected some old postcards and photos from mostly antique markets on my travels. I bought some at a temple market in Kyoto when I lived in Japan. I had these hanging around my apartment at the time. My Japanese friends were really freaked out by them. One said to me that she thought the photos had spirits of the people in them.

I do collect old postcards and engravings of my town only. Also I have some old stereo 3D cards. At the coin fair a guy was selling an old wooden stereo viewer but he wanted 65 Euro for it which I thought was a bit steep, he wouldn't come down on the price either. So I want to get a good viewer if anyone has any ideas where I could get one around Dublin. Or give me advice as to anything I should be aware of before buying one.

I saw that one at the coin fair, it looked a bit rickety for the price alright.

Your best bet is probably ebay. Fair few from UK sellers. They go for around €45. Just have to look carefully that they aren't missing any bits! I have just ordered one (£42+2.60 postage), will let you know how it turns out! I haven't seen any around, but at the Clontarf Antique and Collectibles fair one of the traders said he gets them and the cards from time to time.

Anybody been to the Blackrock market lately? Must check it out.

Yeh that one was a bit rickety alright and the stall owner tried to tell me it was just like the day it was made, was hard trying to keep a straight face. Though I know the guy through coins and he's lied to me in the past so I tend not to go near him.

When you say you ordered one, was that from a shop or did you win it on ebay at auction? Keeping my eye on a couple of auctions and will bid around that £45 for them, thanks.

Took a chance on an ebay auction. It looked like it had all its bits (photograph holder, handle to hold it) and the viewing lenses looked clean enough. Seller had good feedback Will see when it arrives!!
