MacBook Pro warrenty problem

One of my friends spilt a tiny bit of beer on my track pad. The laptop is still working but when i click the pad its kind of sticking sometimes.

I rang apple and they said my warrenty would void if I opened it up and gave it a clean. I rang an apple service centre in dublin and they said they wouldn't clean it, they'd get a whole new part, which i thought was ridiculous. It'll also take about 5 or 10 days to get it sort, the guy was really vague.

My question is, if I open it myself and sort it out, and then for some reason have to send it into apple sometime in the future, will they know i've opened it? i.e. is there a tab or label that snaps when its been opened? Thanks

I would imagine that a spilled beer would count as water damage, which would void your warrantee anyway.

so you think my warrenty is out the window? I've got a 3-year warrenty, if i get them to replace the trackpad, do you think the warrenty is gone for good?

You are not covered under the warranty for accidental damage, which includes liquid damage.

However I can't understand why the rep told you it would void your warranty if you open the case. You have to open the case to install extra ram which is a user-servicable part. (I assume you are talking about the unibody MBP?).

Either way, there is no way for Apple to know you opened the case. Just open it, clean it as best you can and hope for the best. If it was just a small spill and you clean it well Apple should know no different re: future warranty work.

www.ifixit.com has guides with pictures of how to disassemble MBPs properly.

    Hi Elessar,

Thanks for the advice. I was talking to a computer service guy in my work and he said that apple will know if i open it. He mentioned something about tags or clips inside that snap or split when you open it, which lets them know it's been opened. Is this true?

I've never heard of anything like that. There was no tag on the older MBP and I don't believe there is one on the unibodies. iFixit will tell you for sure.

    ^^That's a unibody.
