what size bike to buy for a seven year old ?

    i was thinking of buying a bmx for my son
    he has just turned seven and he is average height
    but im not sure what size bike to buy
    i would appreciate any advice

    Best thing would be to take him into your local bike shop to try some out (this also avoids any basic errors, such as "wrong colour").

    If it's a surprise, just let him run around Halfords bike section for a while, while you pretend to be looking for something else - kids normally can't resist having a go:)

    I've a 6 and 9 year old, both on 24" wheel mountain bikes which is how they seem to size mtbs (by wheel size). I think BMX bikes are pretty much a standard size in that an adult size BMX isn't really much larger than a kids one as far as I can see as the wheels are all 20" and the frame size wouldn't differ much. Unless he's really set on a BMX then he might be better off being steered towards an mtb which would have a bit more versatility. Beasty's idea of letting him loose in Halfords and discreetly watching what he takes an interest in sounds a good one.

    the 24'' mountain bike
