As we become more dismayed with the current government, the oppositions failures and the political system, there have been calls for a new party.

I just found this and thought it might be worth discussing.

A New and Exciting Option in Irish Politicsfrom the PDs in 1986.

The blog post quotes O'Malleys statement at the start of the leaflet....
The Progressive Democrats came into existence in response to inherent weaknesses in the Irish political structure and the disaffection of very many people with the manner this country has been governed in recent years…

Of course the PDs were flawed, but at a time of national crisis similar to now they were able to harness many of the disaffected voters into voting for and even joining the party.

Did the PD's get disaffected voters to vote for them?
They got existing voters to vote for them. Did their voter demographic stray outside a certain demographic, to the right on fiscal/law & order issues. A new approach on NI, liberal (they said) on social issues.

The PD's were of their time imo.
    They are the past.

Anyway we already have a new national party seeking to replace the existing big 2 parties, Amhrán Nua:D
