how to quit an application.

Ok so I sat on my keyboard and this strange application has launched. Its a black box on the bottom left of the screen boarded in white. It seems to be describing what I'm doing, what menu's i'm in etc and as I type here the characters are appearing in the box including 'space' etc. I've no idea how to quit it, I've tried…

Any ideas?

turns out it was 'voice over' and i got it to quit my using activity monitor. mental note to self not to leave keyboard on sofa:D
