Having problem browsing the Internet with Firefox and IE. Timeouts, partial page loads, missing images etc. Download speed is fine. Have scanned machine with Spybot, Malwarebytes and Avira. Sometimes it works ok but 90% of the time it doesn't. Any ideas?

If both browsers are giving the same issues the fault lies with Windows.
Update Windows and get the latest version of the browsers.

    1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
    2. Depending on which Control Panel view you use, Classic or Category, do one of the following:
    * Click System, and then click the Automatic Updates tab.
    * Click Performance and Maintenance, click System, and then click the Automatic Updates tab.
    3. Click the option that you want. Make sure Automatic Updates is not turned off.

Sounds like there are too many simultaneous connections. This leads to packets being delayed and timing out so when they arrive the connection is already closed. If you are using wifi do a continuous ping (start run cmd then type
    ping google.ie -l 20
and leave it finish. Check the packets loss. usually a good sign somethings wrong if it's not 0%.
Torrents if configured a certain way will open an excessive amount of connections (even if they're not using a significant amount of bandwidth) as well as other things. Ping and port scanners for example can be configured that way too.

I've had this in the past and a temp fix is just to keep refreshing the page until you get it. There may be other traffic on the network (and not the internet) that is hogging the connection such as file sharing (like your windows shared folders) if the router isn't configured to provide a priority.

Go into your routers setup page and try find QoS (quality of service) You might need to go "advanced" or "expert mode". Enable this for port 80 and 8008 and 443 (https) for the time being and see if that sorts out your problem at all.

Thanks for the replies. Downloading updates now, will see if that improves things. Pings are around 34ms with the odd 60. Will have a look at the router settings after the updates are finished.

It's a DNS problem. I have a server doing the DNS. When I changed my PC DNS IP address from the address of the server to the address of the ISP the problems disappeared. Looked at the DNS log on the server, no warnings or errors listed.

Was using Eircom's old DNS servers as forwarders - they were turned off Thursday.
