While it is a very cheap price for a generator 650w seems very low and not very usable.

    Absolute bargain.

Well, it depends on what you want to run off it. (Won't boil a kettle)
The output is fairly low (as a rule of thumb, you should only use a device that draws half the output of a generator) That more or less rules out most power tools.
These Aldi gennies take a bit of looking after, I should know, I've the 1kw version, and I've had it nearly two years. the spark plug should be changed immediately and replaced with a good quality known brand spark plug.
Buy the two stroke oil in builders providers - in 1L bottles - do not buy the single shot bottles, total rip off.
In fairness, I've treated mine to a bit of abuse (running high wattage tools) and it's still going, but I had to get a 5.5hp Honda gennie to push larger tools such as SDS drills, mitre saws etc.

Sound advice there, gman2k and no it sure will not boil a (3kw) kettle :)

I've never seen a fossil fuel generator for anywhere near that price though. I still call bargain! :D

I'd say you would be pushing it with a camping kettle.

It'll just about run a diy drill, so useful for when working away from the mains.

Also if you want to be able to fire up your gas/oil boiler during a power cut (or your laptop)these can do the job.

B&Q used to do these for 99 Euro.

Could you run a set of speakers off one of these things?

I would not run anything like a laptop off a generator, without a power cleaner/ regulator of some kind, as the voltage is jumping up and down quite a bit.
All power tools with li-ion batteries say not to use a recharger off a generator.

After the recent power cuts in the snow, the idea of hooking up a generator to the oil burner is tempting. Is this easily done?

regular, cheap ups most likely won't accept cheap generator as power source

That's what a lot of those Aldi / Lidl specials do to me too :D

You don't need it but it might come in handy. Has proved to be the case a good few times over the years!
