Gym etiquette thread

Thought this might be a good idea after reading the annoying gym behaviour thread. I'm probably doing something that's annoying the sh!te out of others in the gym, so maybe people can post their questions here?

    Might as well start myself:

Is it OK the deadlift in front of the squat rack? There isn't a massive amount of space elsewhere and if someone really wanted to get in to do squats they could.

I'm only posting because I thought your name was "Lazytits" - great fitness name!

In answer to your question, lift away imo. If someone clearly wants to squat you can make room.

Well I always dead lift in the squat rack/power cage.

My reasoning is that the benches and associated bars are heavily used (so getting a free 20kg bar is not always possible) and my gym as 4 squat racks/cages.

With my routine, on deadlift day I will be doing squats and standing press beforehand. I will be using the same Oly bar to dead lift, so if I take it out of the rack/cage, the rack/cage is useless anyway.

This was my routine last night and I had a cage for the best part of 1 hour :o

Leave your phone in the locker / at home.

Wipe down the machines / benches after use.

I will not be leaving my phone in my locker. I know people get pissed off at people texting between sets, god knows why, but I have a workout tracker on my phone. Its my log book.

I've started using my iTouch to log my workouts, it's great!

Saves me trying to remember all the weights when I'm loging my workout the next day.

I use my phone to time things.
And sometimes I need to send messages to people.
    I also don't use lockers.

Guilty, I will try to in future.

"Excuse me, i was wondering how many sets you have left" = Proper mannerful approach.

Walking over to an L who is clearly having an off day and cursing loudly at Parsley at frequent intervals... then saying

"When are you going to be finished" = Plate to the face if you're not careful buddy..

    This^^^

If you are macho enough to deadlift 200kg, you are big enough to put your damn plates away afterwards. I'd like to use that bar too, you know.

Leave your phone in the locker / at home.

Why? Mostly I do, but sometimes I take the phone with me if I'm expecting an important call.

It may annoy YOU. But going without a phone because of you is going to annoy someone else. Do you think you're the most important person in the gym?

    How is it ignorant?

Your cinema analogy could not be more flawed.

In my gym, me talking on the phone would be a welcome break from the constant barrage of MTV dance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,114 ✭✭✭corkcomp

i always bring my phone to the gym especially if its a longish cardio session. I keep it on vibrate (no comments!) so I cant see how it would annoy anyone if i was texting or taking the very ocasional urgent call .

It's the ringing phones that bug me. I appreciate that many people need their phone, even if just to say that the babysitter has died, come home at once. But there's no reason it can't be on silent.

    Hehehehehehe.. I second that..

Also.. DO NOT leave unwanted gum stuck in the tops of the treadmills, spit in the water fountain.. Fill an empty 2 lt bottol of water while 5 people are waiting for just a sip ( hopefully no one SPAT in it before) ugh..

    Some dirty animals .. really!!!
