Girlfriends uncle played on the Irish team that played the All Blacks on 7th december 1963. The match was shown on TV by RTE.

Was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction of getting a copy of the match. RTE destroyed the record years ago, but I was hoping that it might be on a best of DVD or some sort of home compilation.

I know its a long shot but could anyone help?

    Thanks

I hate stories like this. I have had run ins with the RTE archives myself for various reasons. It is a complete travesty that they wrote over the tapes just to save £10. There is a vast amount of content from the RTE archives which simply doesn't exist.

Unfortunately, content was wiped and the film used again within a few years of original use, so the kinds of people that would love to make DVD compilations tend to have the same problems.

    Terribly sad really.

She's contacting the NZ side, seemingly they archived everything. Let you know how it goes.

I once had the job in RTE of wiping episodes of Glenroe so that the videotapes could be reused. Quite a short sighted policy tbh.

Given that it was Glenroe they were probably doing the world a favour

Are you sure it was filmed? I don't think RTE broadcast matches in those days.

On the "Greatest Irish victories of the TV age" DVD, Fred Cogley, former RTE commentator said that as late as 1964 RTE would not broadcast matches from Lansdowne Road. It was the old worry about live broadcasts of a local match reducing the attendance. They broadcast the England Ireland game from Twickenham that year (I'm even told that I watched it myself but was far too young to remember it.)

I have never seen any footage of the 1963 match with the All Blacks, even though my dad who was at it still tells me that it was the closest Ireland ever came to beating New Zealand. Apparently the Irish forwards really took them on that day, with McBride and Mulcahy the two locks, the latter being the captain, playing particularly well.

It was famous for McBride letting Meads know early on that he wouldn't be intimidated. Apparently Meads climbed all over McBride at a lineout and Willie John reacted by giving him such a dig in the ribs that he was winded for a few minutes.

Both teams were aghast. The New Zealanders couldn't believe that their talisman was down injured and the Irish couldn't believe that Meads would let the young whippersnapper live as long as the final whistle!

Sure enough, by McBride's own account, at the next ruck he suffered a massive punch and although he didn't see who it was, he had a fair idea. And as he says himself, "I never had any trouble from Meads after that."

found a few bits from it. Her uncle scored a try against them, hence the reason for trying to track it down

    Haha!

"By the unsatisfactory scoring system of rugby, All Blacks win 6-5!"

    Cool!

I never realise it was filmed. Don't you just love newsreel commentaries?

I have to pinch myself to realise it's not Harry Enfield taking the piss. :)
