They used BMI, which is a vague guideline at best. Stupid reaction.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

Just automated generic correspondence which is an integral part of bureaucracy - always means someone will be insulted. Nothing to get bothered about, a non story on a slow news day.

Maybe they're trying to make people realise that being above a healthy weight doesn't mean you necessarily have to be 'fat'?

BMI is probably the most out of date inacurate system to use.

Bureaucrats with too much time on their hands and not enough in the way of brains. It doesn't help that the Daily Fail is making a mountain out of a molehill as they nearly always do.

+1 It is the most ridiculous system to use e.g it doesnt allow for the difference between muscle and fat.

I feel like crying after reading that. She looks like a perfectly happy and healthy little kid and i hope she never reads this article. The poor kid has enough pressures in this overly superficial world to be worrying about, without this crap being said about her.

    Im sad :(

To be fair, the UK are trying to fight a real problem with childhood obesity.

The methods they use to test kids have to be applied to everyone, even if it isn't a precise indicator of risk. They never actually said the kid was fat anyway, they just gave the result of the test and the risk factors associated with a high BMI

I reckon the mothers just out for an easy buck

This wasn't a bunch of people saying "you fatty" to her, it was government bureaucracy.

Nobody's stupid enough to think she's fat.

The kids'll be calling her "fatty" in the schoolyard tomorow.

True, nothing really to be concerned about.

If you don't understand that bureaucracy can not allow for even small deviations with regard to established protocols, you don't understand it's purpose.

The parents want the dough I am afraid.

Possibly, if they get wind of the "news" article... and whose fault would that be? Oh yeah, the mother's, for drawing attention to the non issue in the first place.

well then her mother will have done her alot more damage than a letter addressed to her parents ever would have.

Her parents are a bit embarrassed they've recieved a letter labelling their daughter as fat, as they don't want her to worry about her appearance.

So they get an article purely about her weight? Nice one mommy

EDIT: Oh ok, those two beat me ^^^^

I thought it was pretty shocking to label a skinny 5 year old kid as 'overweight' - you got a problem with that?

The title of the thread is pretty descriptive, was it "necessary" for you to click on a thread that you consider to be "drivel" ??

    Was the mother really furious?

Yeh...we might get that. You do remember what it was like in school???

is why sh!t like that shouldnt be printed. If it was an adult fair enough, but a kid isnt going to understand BMI logic or illogic for that matter when they see the words "fat" or "obese".

I'd like to inform you that the keys on your keyboard are clinically obese. As you are the operator and sole maintainer of the keyboard, the blame clearly falls on you. It is obvious that you are not giving the keys enough exercise and I would presume that a close inspection of the keyboard would reveal the remains of pizza, burgers and other unhealthy foods.

We shall be sending around a computer technician to review your case shortly. A negative review may result in your keyboard being taken into care by technical services.

    Thank you.

    Technical Computer Services of Ireland.
