I've set up a basic xp network/workgroup where I have shared directories so I can stream movies...

Can someone tell me how I can get my macbook onto the network so I can stream movies?

    Thanks

I'm assuming its not a domain controlled network? There's no "getting it on the network" perse, you just connect to the share.

    Go to Finder\Desktop
    Command+k
smb:\\ip address or hostname of server
    enter credentials if needed
select share name from drop down menu (if this applies)

This will mount the network drive. You can have it automount if you like, add it to startup items under your user profile under system prefs.

You can use directory access to join workgroups and whatnot, but TBH its not worth messing with if you know the info for the box thats sharing the media.

It's just a standard work group on xp - a home wireless network to share files.

The wordgroup is called "MSHOME" and my computer is named "CollyPC"

How do i find out the IP address of my network/computer? I tried putting the name of the woorkgroup/pc in after smb:\\ but it did not work.

    its smb://

to get the IP address of your windows computer, on it go to start -> run and type cmd and press enter.

    in cmd type ipconfig /all

your network address will more then likely be something beginning with 192.168

    Thanks.

Ok I have already set a static IP address on my pc as 192.168.1.11 - an ipconfig confirms this.

I went to directory utility and typed: sbm://192.168.1.1 - hit ok - and it immediately gives me an error saying "There was no response from bm://192.168.1.1"

    Any ideas?

It's smb, not sbm - or is that just a typo in the forum post rather than what you typed in?

My Windows systems just show up under "shared" in Finder though - I can select them from there, log in with valid credentials once (and have the keychain remember the settings) and that's it. I've very rarely had to access the smb shares by typing the IP manually.

Ok thanks. So I was trying the above but it was not working, until I saw my pc name appear in the finder under shared as you said. Great! Worked perfectly.

However today when I went back, it was gone. How do I get it back??

You can get it to auto-connect every time you login by first connecting it manually as above, then go to:

Apple Menu -> System Preferences -> Accounts -> Login Items

and drag the volume into there (the volume icon will appear on desktop when connected).
