    Hello all,

I am invited to a going away party next week. A friend/acquaintance is emigrating to the UK, is it the done thing to get a gift/card in these situations?

    Cheers

    John

...When I emigrated to the UK last August, I didn't get anything (then again, I have no friends and didn't have a party). You should just ask the othesr who are going if they are buying anything. It's not just the circumstances surrounding the party that matters - the person who is leaving is also an issue, plus the 'unwritten' rules regarding gifts amongst your circle of friends.

    ...just ask.

Not sure - I wouldn't think so unless you wanted to buy him ryanair vouchers to come back and visit.

When I moved away my friend wanted to know what time exactly my flight was.
I didn't know why he wanted to know what time my flight was.

The first text message I got after switching on my phone in London was:
    "and stay out"

I wouldn't say so, unless you're very very close and you want to give them a reminder/sentimental gift thingy.
