Hi all, I know there’s a sticky about what all the experienced guys and gals would do if they were building their house again and that’s very helpful to a novice like me, but, what I’d also like to know from all who have come out the other side of building their very own home is, what have you done with your house that you’re most glad you did? If you could pin point just one part of your house that you’re most happy with or the one crucial decision that you made during the build that has made all the difference when it comes to actually living in your home then I’d like to hear it….cheers :)

Well i haven't finished my build yet but i'd like to say i'm really glad we went ahead with a garage. I'm thinking now if we hadn't where the hell would we have put the bbq, leftover tiles, paint etc etc.

I'm absolutely delighted I put in a stove with backboiler in the kitchen/living room. I've been burning all the pallets/roof truss off-cuts, etc for the past three months so I've been getting plenty of free heat, hot water, hot radiators etc. all from wet timber that's lying in a pile in the field... It makes the house very homely also with a stone fireplace right in the heart of the house.. It's probably the most admired feature internally amongst most visitors.. Love it..

I had the Garage built at the same time as the house with the same spec. Insulation, Electrics, Plumbing, Underfloor Heating etc.

I am also glad that I opened up the attic now and made a feature out of it

Finally I'm glad I put in underfloor, the house is a steady 18 degrees and drying out nicely.

Thanks for the replies guys, this is the kinda stuff I'm interested in as I'm having a hard time deciding what heating system to use, whether or not to go with a concrete first floor, whether or not to put in a stove with a back boiler etc, ...and they're just the few things I can think of at the mo! I know it's a personal choice but it's still great to hear from people who've made the leap of faith before me and it's worked out well for them...happy days :)

    ninjaBob,

What heat source are you using for your underfloor?

Heatpump using a combination cylinder (Buffer Tank / Cylinder all in one). Time will tell if I am glad of this purchase ;) for now we get great heat out of it and thanks to the cylinder the amount of time the pump is on appears to be decreasing. I ran pipes to both Chimney breasts on the chance that I want to run back boilers into the cylinder, and I also made it possible to put solar on the house and/or garage. The Heat Pump is located in a LeanTo beside the garage.

The OH is happy we spent the extra money on the front door, it does look fantastic. (Will post pics once it's painted)
