    Hey all,

I got the call yesterday to start in the March intake. If I remember correctly the initial training lasts 21 weeks which would mean I'm finished at the end of august! Now the problem is I have a two week holiday in Greece booked for the start of september! Is it completely unlikely that I would be able to get it off?

The girlfriend is going to skin me alive if I have to cancel it!

In related news, I think im going to do the euro millions this weekend because just as I was contemplating loosing the £150 deposit, a letter from my travel company popped through the door saying that they had to change the flight times slightly! Which means that I should have the legal right to cancel and claim a full refund! Bonus!! :D

think you get up to 5 days off in GV but you must have a very good reason for this! also, dont think theyd let you defer that long just for a holiday, if they changed flights and your entitled to a refund could you not just book another one for next year! plus id rather get into GV than go on a holiday. your GF should see that its not a flexible opportunity and she can go on holiday anytime!

Well if you got a letter from the travel company what I would do is cancel the holiday and rebook it for a date when you know you will be free to go. Could be the best option instead of running the risk of losing all the costs.

What beca said. You have to cancel the holiday or decline the offer to join the PSNI.

I'm going to disagree with you all.

His post says the holiday is booked for September.

I dont know his start date but he reckons he'll pass out in August.

As long as you dont mess up anything in Garnerville you'll pass out on time. You should then hopefully be able to get the time off for the holiday. I say should, there were a couple in my squad had time off during tutorship for weddings. But that was tutorship, and it was for their own weddings.

A holiday during the 10 weeks training after Garnerville might be a bit different.

But, even besides all that, dont be going and doing something hasty like canceling just yet, or worse still turning down your offer.

My advice would be to ring and first enquire about defering if that is something you would be willing to do. The worst they can say is no.

If that isnt an option then wait until you start in Garnerville and speak to the lovely lady in ops planning and explain to her that you will be into the 10 weeks and is there any possibility of having the time off. If she says yes then super!! You've got your holiday. You'll more than likely miss the driving course tho since you're probably going to miss the firearms course you were meant to be on by being off.

If she says no, you can't have the two weeks off, then cancel the holiday. You dont need to cancel the holiday right now and lose that money. You can just as easily cancel and lose it in a couple of months time :D

Until very recently I worked as a travel agent, and Im afraid I might have to burst your bubble regarding the cancellation.
If the company have only changed the flight times very slightly, and have given you ample notice (which they have), and offered an alternative, (its not as if they have cancelled the flight) then you dont have the choice to cancel free of charge, and you will lose your deposit.
Your other options are to change the dates to later in the year, with the same operator, which would incur an amendment fee, usually about £35 pp, or for your girlfriend to go with someone else, and do a name change, again for a fee of about £35

Or another option is to go on holiday and I'll have your place in hotel G!! Me likely that option best :p:p

There we go! For £70 you could put it off until a little later in the year when it definately wont matter if you take the time off.

I'm assuming you have posted this dilema tongue in cheek as no-one would take it seriously.

I reckon you should ask your drill sergeant on Day One if you have to cancel your holiday as your girlfriend will give you a hard time. I could probably see the fireworks erupt from my house!!:D:D

I know where you are coming from Misterjay, although I gave him a serious reply, Id cancel a flight to the moon just to get that call! On a serious note though, and I hope no one takes offence to this, the commitment to the job would have to be questioned.
If one is worried about missing a holiday with a few months notice, how will they cope with missing Christmas day, birthdays, anniversaries, cancelled plans etc with no notice. This is not a job, its a lifestyle, and the important people in your life need to buy into that too.
Im sure this will start a debate, but just my opinion
A big wake up call methinks

True. I reckon a wee deal could be struck. Either give up your place or get one of us to take your holiday instead.

PS You have all failed the diversity competence. You have assumed El D is male because a girlfriend has been mentioned. Shame on you. :D:D:D

I was speaking to the Training staff a few days ago....same dilemma, I pass out in June and have a hol booked for start of July. Answer, no hope!! If its a wedding then yes but only for the 5 days you have to take during your continuation training (the 10 weeks). The soonest you can take your A/L really is after your 10 weeks tutorship.

Well , there you have it OP - it would seem that you have a choice to make between joining the Police or 2 weeks in Greece - whats it going to be ?
