Recently got a new pc with a geforce 310 in it. Have the pc connected to an LCD monitor via DVI and have it also connected to my projector via HDMi (thru my Sony DH800). All is working fine except for the display on the projector.

It's not displaying the full image. If I select cloned image its ok, but drops the res on the monitor from 1080P to lower (projector is 720p) . Besides that, HDCP doesn't work in Cloned mode. I've tried the windows settings and also tried fiddling with the Nvidia control panel to no avail. The projector is an extended part of the desktop and I'm out of ideas and searching and googling hasn't turned up much. Would appreciate any help :)

you may be experiencing an overscan issue,
set the project to "just scan" or "1:1" mode rather than 16:9 and see how you get on

Cheers for the reply! Set the projector to Full Through and its the same thing.

I'm not cloning the displays and the projector is just displaying the middle part of the screen and thats it. It's an extension of the desktop as If I move my mouse to the full right hand side of my monitor it appears in the projector screen. I've resized the desktop using the nvidia control panel but it hasnt made any difference. Starting to pull out some hair now

Am I missing a simple setting, should I be ignoring the windows display settings and using the nvidia exclusively or does it matter?

    so its ok "cloned"
    ok "single display projector"
extended desktop displays "in a window" (am i right?)

if its this, then i would suggest using the "multiple display wizard" in nvidia to see if that works.
if that doesnt, maybe try reinstalling the drivers for nvidia
i wouldnt use windows settings at all

When extended desktop is selected on nvidia (on projector) is only showing a zoomed in part of the screen. I'm essentially seeing a zoomed in part of my desktop wallpaper.

Cloned its ok, but I'm missing the top and bottom of the screen on the pj.

What should I actually be expecting here? Should I be getting a copy of my desktop on the projector (without it being cloned) or should I just drag media center into the projector side of things and run that from there?

    How does everybody elses work?

Right with a bit more fiddling, Media Center is starting in the Projector side of the screen (after dragging it in there a few times). Thats it then, is it?

i use a dedicated machine for a htpc.
you cant split "focus" in windows for media centre vs other apps so i didnt work to my satisfaction.
if i had it on machine that normally functioned as a dedicated pc (kb/mouse/etc) then i probably wouldnt bother with media centre as its functions arenet needed (unless you are using it for TV also)

im not sure i fully understand your issue, but the setup you are descrbing requires an extended desktop with media centre on the projector side of it. if media centre correctly fills the screen on the projector then your issue is solved :)

sometimes desktop backgrounds can go a bit weird on extended desktops.
i have one in work and get the corner of the image and then black screen, until i maximise an app etc
